Wartys Dr. Who First Watch Empty
PostSubject: Wartys Dr. Who First Watch   Wartys Dr. Who First Watch EmptySun Mar 04, 2018 10:09 pm

I am only doing this because of Vonnegut. She has been pestering me to do a "First Watch" something and since our children will eventually begin to create a master race, I feel somewhat obligated.

I have some friends who watch Dr. Who.
I've heard all sorts of people rave about Dr. Who.
I am not sure I will like Dr. Who.

It seems sort of "out there" and I am not really an "out there" sort of guy. I raise chickens for eggs, and I grow corn and squash... I work on my own vehicles, and I have guns. So I might not be the first guy you think of when you think
of people who would like Dr Who.

However...

Once Vonnegut pestered me about reading this thing called a graphic novel. Actually it was a series of graphic novels, called SANDMAN, by Neil Gaiman. I explained how I was not the sort of guy that would enjoy a silly comic book what with the corn and guns and stuff, but she was quite persistent. By "quite persistent" I mean annoyingly so... badgering... harassing..pestering, nagging... harrying..
Wartys Dr. Who First Watch O-ANNOYING-PLANE-PASSENGERS-570

Anyway... because I owed her a boon, I read the first edition..and the second.. and I became hooked on it because it is awesome. It may sound funny, but it was almost life-altering. There was some connection I made with it that was quite unlike anything I had experienced before.

So as she had requested I wrote a few trifling words about it, and it seemed to make her happy.

Her being happy is a good thing because she is so much easier to deal with when she is happy.
Wartys Dr. Who First Watch 00

Trust me on this... I once did this one little thing.. I disappeared for 18 months, and she totally over-reacted.
Wartys Dr. Who First Watch Woman-screaming-at-man

Anyway... so after the whole Sandman thing which made her stop yelling at me about the disappearing thing, she started pestering me again to do some sort of "First-Watch" because I am not sure I can ever read anything again because it will pale in comparison to Sandman so much that I will hate it.

I put it off and put it off until she started yelling again, so I finally decided on Dr. Who since I accidentally stumbled on it while on APrime, and I had som e vague recollection of her saying she had watched it. I literally started watching it..like the day before our forum went super-nova.

Go figure..
Wartys Dr. Who First Watch Go-figure_o_1060681

Anyway... I don't know where this will go. I don't know if a TV show will inspire me to write much of anything, and I don't know how I feel about writing about anything ever again after my Sandman thread got sucked into a &#%#9@& black hole.

Anyway.... I've begun watching Dr. Who..

The reboot that began around 2005, I think..

I am not sure you will, either. I'm very curious as to how this will turn out.

You're still alive, so I didn't over-react TOO much.

Yes, it was 2005.

So, one thing you need to know, is that you can't skip any episodes, but I wish you could. Early S1 is low-budget, shaky writing, some shit that is flat out absurd, it DOES take a while to find its feet. Around episode 4-5 you'll be like "seriously wtf is this?"

Episode 6 has an entirely different flavor, though, and starts to develop what the show will become.
There is still some variation after that, but if you watch episodes 9 and 10 without wanting to keep watching, quit then.
Pretty much every fan of the show that started with the 2005 reboot, will say S1E9-10 made them fans of the show.

If you get that far, and it's not your thing, let it go, and I will hold no grudge.

So Warty, at this point, I need:

--Your thoughts on Rose. Adorable or annoying or both?

--Your thoughts on Mickey. Annoying or extremely annoying or both?

--Your thoughts on the Doctor.

And, stuff from the previous "classic" seasons, some of which you already know--
The Doctor is a type of alien called a "Time Lord," from the planet Gallifrey. His real name is unknown. Time Lords look like humans (or, humans look like them), but they have two hearts rather than one, and are much hardier, being able to withstand radiation and stuff like that. They also regenerate upon death up to 12 times, replacing all of their cells and basically becoming a different person, while retaining memories (thus, the ability to have the same Doctor played by so many different actors). The Doctor you have met, is the 9th (the previous 8 having been in the classic series). He has a reputation and a tendency to be a loner / renegade amongst his own people, and has a fascination with Earth in particular.

If you're on ep2 or 3, which I think you said you are, you've heard references to a "Time War." That is NOT from the classic series and you aren't missing anything as far as that, coming into this in 2005. That will unfold and be explained as time goes on.

I am doing all sorts of new things these days. Another friend of mine who likes Sandman talked me into listening to this thing called a podcast. Apparently people do these things on the internets that are a bit like old radio shows. I’m doing that now as well. It’s out there as well.. sort of like Stephen Kings take on Lake Wobegon.

Anyway... I’ve watched the first 3 episodes of Dr. Who. It’s Dr who? moreso than Dr. Who.
The first episode was about Mannequins coming to life. It was out there, but bizzarely entertaining.
The second episode saw the Doctor and his companion travel to the end of the Earth.. this one I didn’t like as much, but it developed the characters.

Now the 3rd eppy saw them go back in time which is something I prefer. I am a student of history. So while the rea imated corpses and stuff was again “out there”, I actually enjoyed the portrayal of Charles Dickens.

My early thoughts are that I am enjoying it on a character driven level. The Doctor as portayed by Christopher Eccleston is quirky, and a bit manic. The star however has been his companion, Rose.

The supporting and guest actors give the show that unique English feel, and so far.. so good.

Honestly, if I could tell you to skip the next two episodes, I would. They're a bit absurd. But, you can't skip anything.
Episode 6 might be more to your taste. It's when I started to pay attention.

The guy in my avatar is the 4th Doctor, as played by Tom Baker.

I also don't know if you'll enjoy this series. I didn't get very far into it myself, largely due to the untimely death of my father. If you get to where i was at, with a little help from Kelly, i'll probably join in, if that's okay.

And, there is plenty of going back in time, and most of it is really fun.

I am happy that you're digging Eccleston. Jason, who catches an occasional episode with me, says that he likes the guy with the hair and the old guy (10 and 12), but not the young guy or the guy with the ears (11 and 9). It broke my heart when he said that. 9 will always be special to me, and I love Eccleston.

This show, for all of its weirdness and "out there" stuff, is mainly character-driven, so if you're connecting with the characters already, maybe you will like this after all.

Rose: Adorable so far, but I am wary of her becoming annoying. She is strangely attractive to me.

Mickey: Eh... I was sort of happy he was eaten by a garbage can, but really it’s a bit early to judge.

The Doctor: As noted quirky... a bit manic. I like him well enough.

Thoughts on Rickey/Mickey - He was back again on the recent episodes I watched, and he didn't annoy me all that much.

Episodes 4 - Aliens of London

The stuff with Rose's family worked...

The story itself was okay, but the altered pig pilot and the Slitheen themselves were really on the absurd side. That alone isn't a big deal with me though... I can take a bit more absurdity than you might imagine as long as it is in some way compelling. The Harriet(?) character was good, so all in all not bad.. but I can see how pig-pilots and farting can be off-putting to those above the age of 14.

I'll try and watch WW3, the second part of this story, tonight.

His "annoying" factor comes and goes, but it is always there. IMO.

I did warn you about these eps. They are the height of S1 absurdity, and I can bet that a lot of people just stopped right there.

Episode 6, I think you might like much more. It was really when I first started to sit up and pay a bit of attention. Ep 7 is a bit meh, but then the show starts to really hit stride.

And yes, the reason you can't skip is because then you wouldn't get introduced to Harriet Jones MP, and stuff like that.

I notice watching “WW3” that doctor keeps mentioning he knows the name “Harriet Jones”

Does he know her actions from the future? The Doc seems to exist outside of the boundaries of time.

I can see why this is the episode that really grabbed you. While the Dalek itself may look like an 8th graders home-made movie prop, this has an entirely different and compelling tone to it.

1st off.. the concept of the guy who owns the internet sitting in his secret fortress virtually flipping a coin
to decide if a Republican or Dem should be the next POTUS. (Two sides of the same coin so it really doesn’t matter.. they don’t run things anyway).. That’s a serious concept being thrown out by this “campy” show.

The way the Doctor turned serious upon sight of the Dalek (some serious backstory here, and probably more to come) What amounts to a race war.. the hatred.. total annihilation of a species... Then the whol thing about them both being the same... alone in the universe. Then you have what amounts to callous torture of a seemingly sentient being..

That’s a heavy load for just the first 14:31...

I shall now carry-on... (although  my oldest son just walked up to me and said “so you’re watching Doctor Who now?“... and then he walked away to go to bed while shaking his head.

Yes to serious backstory - iirc the Daleks were the only "monster/enemy" to appear in every season of the classic series.

Oh just wait. This is why getting through S1 is important, because the show gets much heavier and much more philosophical as it goes on.

As far as backstory, I had nearly none when I watched, and was surprised later at how little I needed. I thought the events of this episode were brought on by stuff that had happened in the classic series, but actually it's a lot of stuff that happened in between the classic and the reboot... we're all finding out about the war together.

You definitely don't know the Doctor yet, but with this ep, you're starting to.

Although yes, the Daleks are a "classic" villain, this is an entirely new angle and approach to them.

I'm watching now.

Wartys Dr. Who First Watch Empty
PostSubject: Re: Wartys Dr. Who First Watch   Wartys Dr. Who First Watch EmptyWed Mar 07, 2018 11:33 pm

My comments...

I love the Doctor walking through the museum. It has a bit more weight now that I have seen actual Cybermen, but even the first time, it's fun. He sees a Cyberman head, "An old friend... well, enemy. The stuff of nightmares reduced to an exhibit. I'm getting old."

There is a little thing in the episodes you've seen so far. I'm waiting for you to notice it. It comes up often, for a reason.

"Republican or Democrat?"
Diana: "Democrat sir"
Van Stattan: "For what reason?"
Diana: ".... Because they're so funny, sir?"

LMFAO. Definitely an interesting take on politics.

Looking at details like Van Statton at his desk in front of a really bad portrait of himself.

And, the Dalek. EXTERMINATE <3

Eccleston is so brilliant as the Doctor. He can be light and goofy, then turn dark in the blink of an eye, while making you believe it. He doesn't have 10's thousand-lightyear-stare, but I still love it when he's in pain.

"If you cannot kill, then what are you good for, Dalek? What's the point of you?"
So much rage-- and it's a delighted rage. He enjoys his anger at the Dalek.
"I watched it happen. I MADE IT HAPPEN."

I don't remember whether or not this is the first time we find out that all of the other Time Lords are dead. "They burnt with you. The end of the last great Time War. Everyone lost."

And the antagonistic empathy, alone in the universe, Doctor and Dalek.

"It fell to earth on the Ascension islands" Jane would have a field day with that line.

"The advances I've made from alien junk. Broadband? Roswell." LMFAO

The Doctor confronting the evil and the ignorant and trying to warn them of impending doom is extremely common episode trope. This episode is special because the Doctor has his own vendetta, it's personal, and that clouds his judgment.

He doesn't have pity... but Rose does.

I suppose I may as well come out now and admit that Daleks are my absolute favorite of all Doctor Who villains. They beat Cybermen by a country mile. I think part of it is the absurdity of "homicidal pepper pot." They look so goofy, while being so fucking inimical. Plus, everything is cooler when you say it in a Dalek-voice.

And the comedy of "oh, we're safe, there are stairs!" and then it just starts levitating, LMAO.

But, there is depth under the surface. The despair of a Dalek without orders. The Doctor's gleeful rage from earlier is underlaid with weariness. He's trying, but he's very tired.

And his streak of coldness, which is actually so seldom seen in this show-- he's so afraid of the Dalek that he closes the bulkhead when Rose is still on the other side. Would he do that, later on in the show, when he knows her better? I really don't know.

Good thing Rose makes everything better. Dalek: "You gave me life. What else have you given me?"

The issue of an soldier with no orders. What do you want, Dalek? It says "Freedom," but what exactly are you going to do with that freedom?

As far as companions go, Rose is defined by her guts and her empathy. She changed the Dalek by giving it her empathy. But that's too much change. It can't recognize or understand itself with that. It can only die.

"Why do we survive?" the Dalek asks the Doctor.
A question that hits close to home for the last of his species. The Doctor needs to find his own reasons.

I like to rewatch good Who eps, a LOT, and the only pre ep9/10 episodes I watch from S1 are this one, and ep1 (for nostalgia value) and ep8 (for feels).

Next episode is standard S1 "meh" fare. But I'll rewatch it, because you'll be watching it.

I'm not a big fan of the companion that transitions from 11 to 12

I just want my 10th Doctor back, I am so excited for the audio shows

That would be because she's the fuckin worst.

But, 12's last-season companion is quite good, once we get rid of Fuckin' Worst Companion.

The only Doctor I've ever been excited about was 12, because I was not a fan of 11.

I'll give her a shot. We'll see.

Yeah... loved "Broadband, Roswell" and the insinuation there about all this stuff coming from alien technology.

It is hard for me to dislike the Dalek, as they just do what they do. "Why did you bite me?" I'm a snake..what did you expect.

Rose having some elements of herself the Doctor lacks makes sense.. It works well with the idea of "companion". I like that a lot more than just a person along for the ride.

I will keep my eyes and ears open... twice may be a coincidence but three times will indicate a pattern.

Re: Ep 2, "The End of the Universe".  It's an obvious reference to  Adam's "Restaurant at the End of the Universe."  I know that he wrote some  Dr. Who episodes  but do you remember if there was an "in memory of .. " tribute to him in the end credits of this episode?

I am still seeing everything in reference to similarities and parallels with Sandman.

Oh good, he's already wolfed down the first half of the season. Excellent. :)

A lot of esoteric elements in the show go unrecognized, not to mention the aesthetics (the show is very deliberate in its use of color palette, for example, especially with Red and Blue). It really is Doctor Who? in the sense that the show is now very interested in exploring Identity. Like, that shot in Ep 6 where the Doctor's face is superimposed with the reflection of a Cyberman helmet -- for those of us who followed the Classic Series, knowing that Cybermen have turned off their emotions (you could probably guess that given it pretty much looks like a robot head), it's very suggestive that the Doctor has too, and by the end of the episode we have a much better idea of why that's the case.

What the show really wants to do is open up your third eye.

Episode 8 hooked me and Episodes 9 and 10 blew me away.

(I don't currently watch the series but I need to join Amz prime and re-watch the first several seasons of the reboot again, some great episodes.)

RIGHT!?  I <3 Daleks all day.  They were genetically engineered to be sentient weapons of mass destruction, and they have awesome voices.

EXTERMINATE.

YES.  A good companion makes up for the Doctor's flaws, and changes him.  IMO.

So, what do you think about the Dalek falling on the Ascension Islands?

So I see a reference to Restaurant at the end of the Universe, and what pops into my mind is the Inn at World’s end.

Jane mentioned the play on identity, and we all know how much that came up in Sandman.

I think there are parallels with the Dr and Morpheus in how they have some troubles relating to the humans they are dealing with. I can see that lack of complete understanding coming into play as Dr. Who progresses.

I can see far an interesting mixture of history, fantasy, a tiny bit of humor, and then some sudden seriousness..

That’s for starters.
