By Mark Polishuk [November 17, 2014 at 9:11am CST]

The Marlins and slugger Giancarlo Stanton are in agreement on a record-setting 13-year, $325MM contract extension, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports. While the deal hasn’t yet been made official, Heyman reports that a press conference should be held later this week and “there is a clear understanding the deal will be finalized.

curious the Atlanta would trade Heyward when they need offense. And for a pitcher - last I knew their system was stocked with pitchers.

JJ - what do you think? You lost Shelby Miller in this deal.

Sox apparently sign hanley ramirez for 5 and 90 million. Not sure I like this move

or 3rd base - if he wants to move there.

He may have a better attitude now that he's not on the Marlins

at least your team is doing something - mine had one target and I'm hearing their backing off now. We're going to parade the same exact team out there - minus Hamels probably Mad

Reports are the Sox have signed Sandoval as well, His weight concerns me. I only want Lester back, I will trust the front office because they dont normally miss on free agents, we will see.

so if they sign panda and ramirez, it would appear that bogarts would be trade bait for someone, panda at third, hanley at shortstop and where would bogarts play. still not sure i like these deals, especially if they dump another 90 million on the panda, and not one pitcher signed.

me too, a left hander that can pitch at fenway is not a thing that comes along every day. and I still think he will be cheaper than scherzer

Lester to the Cubs, 6 yrs-155 million. Congrats Derek, you've got a new Ace. It's sad to see Jon go, I guess all of the Sox efforts will now turn to Scherzer, probably try to acquire Hamels as well.

why would they pay for Hamels when they wouldn't pay for Lester though?

I still have mixed feelings about trading him - that's the only move we have to make but the Phils don't have a great track record in getting decent prospects back.

I can see the Dodger being desperate enough to trade the farm for Hamels though.

The Red Sox have Clay Bucholz as a Starter, and he is it, they now have to pay or else it will be a 100 loss season. They were the other team in contention for Lester, but they weren't going to offer 6 years for a 31 year old pitcher(understandably). Now they will have to overpay Scherzer and sell the farm if they have to for Hamels.

He has been relatively healthy his while career, he is damn near unhittable in the postseason. Things are looking up for the lovable losers

its a good signing - even if he breaks down at the end you should get most of your money's worth

maybe the Cubs will still go after Hamels

that would be quite a 1-2 punch

I didn't realize you were down to Buckolz only.

isn't James Shields also out there? They don't necessarily need to overpay for someone.

do you have OF prospects? I think that's really the only thing they want for Hamels. We don't need middle infield, our bullpen is good (as long as they don't do anything stupid like trade one of them).

Boston is overloaded at OF, I don't want James Shields, he is not a big time pitcher, he's a 3 or 4 starter at best. If they can sign Scherzer he would be 1, trade for Hamels and he would be 2. Bucholz would be 3 and then maybe bring 2 guys up for 4 and 5.

I highly doubt that they will go after scherzer, he's gonna want 170 at least.
they will trade for a couple of pitchers, maybe james shields will come, but they won't pay scherzer if they weren't gonna pay lester.

we will see, but I am not surprised he didn't re-sign. if, by some miracle he manages to win a WS with the cubs, that will look pretty good on his resume and be something to be proud of fer sher

Absolutely, he would be the only person ever to win a World Series with the Cubs and Sox, but I think the Cubs still need to add some pieces.

maybe we can work a trade with them, give them a few of 18 outfielders, have them pick up some of the salary and they can send us lester at the trade deadline when they have 20 wins lol4

Maybe... I do think having Lester makes the Cubs a lot better, but he will need help. I do think the Sox will offer a bigger deal to Scherzer though, they Have to get some legitimate pitching or this team is going no where!

all of a sudden I hear Hamels' name a lot :|

mostly west coast. - one rumor even including Jimmy Rollins who may actually agree to waive his no-trade :O he previously said he didn't have any intention of leaving.

i can't see them spending 170-180 or more on scherzer, he already turned down pretty much the deal lester just go.

he is not worth it, he is a right handed lester if you look at the numbers, plus won't he cost a draft pick too?/ or did they already give all those up to sign ther panda and ramirez

what does happen to the draft picks when you acquire more than one free agent?

I'm guessing that they just keep going down the line - 1st round, 2nd......

they said that the red sox have made inquiries into about 17 pitchers this off season. i've heard everyones name except friggin CC sabathia and johan santana for gawd sakes.

they have pieces to trade and money to spend, but should have just spent the money on lester . they could have had lester and liriano and andrew miller already if they spent what they have already given to panda and ramirez

at least they are picking up some innings eaters, I have more faith in porcello being abkle to pitch in the AL than Miley, but ya never know.

and the more gys they pick up this way, the less likely they are to go after scherzer or hamels or shields.

of the 3 shields to me is the most likely, like lester all he costs is money

look for the dodgers to make a move for him, they have alot of prospects all of a sudden after blowing up the team last night.

maybe crawford and/or either along with some prospects for hamels.

all of a sudden all the moves are taking place, it's like everyone was just waiting to see who got lester and then all the other deals started

I don't see either one as a target for us - we're looking to contend in a couple of years - not now. And Eithier is older. And Crawford has some issues both with our type of market and injuries. They may still go after Hamels but they're also getting some pitching back so who knows where they are.

I don't rule out the Cubs either - I think they still need another ace type to win.
