The third season will begin airing on 4/11 @ 9pm on Syfy, however I'm doing a catch up viewing and I'm about half way through the 2nd season. This is one of the best Sci-fi series I've seen, the the CGI and attention to detail are "out of this world". Like GOT, it takes a few episodes before you know the players and get a feel for the storylines but it comes together beautifully. I'll have more later and I really recommend this series.

Mr. Bill, I'm doing a re-watch (first time through for Mr. Pi, who isn't as fond of sci fi as I am) and we're still on Season 1, so I may put the re-watch on hold. I'm too anxious to see what's going in, in the new season. And I know how confused I got reading through the Breaking Bad first-watch on the old site while watching/listening to the commentaries on BCS. Sort of a variation on time travel.

Glad you're enjoying Expanse. I'm looking forward to posting about it once you've caught up. Also, I'd recommend that newcomers watch with subtitles on if they have that option because the Belter slang gets a bit of getting used to, mi pensa.

The Indian politician with the Jeanne Moreau 5-pack-a-day voice took a bit of getting used to but she has really grown on me.  I also find the storyline, probably inspired by the classic film, "Laura" interesting, although, wow, she's way out of his league.

Wow, I hadn't thought of Laura in connection with Julie Mao, very cool. Chrisjen's clothes are so gorgeous (that jewelry!) but they aren't just eye candy--they're a good way to remind us how melded Earth's cultures have become. (Chrisjen in that red cloak going to Holden's birth home--those windmills, that Cervantes book, neither done in a way to hit you over the head--what knockout photography.)

We just (re-)watched the season 1 episode with the "donkey balls" code and the guy with the glass eye. The "donkey balls" problem wasn't as tense as the first time I saw it, which was a nail-biter then. But I was again on the edge of my seat during the confrontation between Glass Eye Guy, Holden, and Amos.
Such complex characters!:
And I again teared up when Chrisjen and Holden's gestational mom had their discussion about their sons.

People shouldn't let my previous comment about subtitles scare them off. You adjust pretty quickly to the Belter terms tossed into conversations, it just takes you by surprise at first.

I'll have to re-watch the "donkey balls" episode,  I did a quick binge watch and everything kind of blends.  I'll need to re-watch again to pick up some detailed notes.  As far as Laura, I think it's Miller's fantasy obsession with Julie from her pictures and profile that really stands out,  and perhaps there's more similarities as we move on. 987   Miller is sort of the stereotype crooked detective working both sides, but there's some great character development and we begin to understand his background and where he's coming from.

I love that the Belters have their own language and accent when speaking mixed English and Belter and the "Outers" vs "Inners" conflict ( OPA - "Outer Planets Alliance").    Again, the attention to detail is amazing. Also some of the best Zero-G scenes since Gravity.

eta:

Just reviewed the "Donkey Balls" episode, that was pretty intense but hilarious, and that's right, there's the spy with the camera eye (Six Million Dollar Man tech). Great stuff.  Alex is one of my favorite characters but Chrisjen Avasarala, wow.  I don't know if Syfy censors since I'm watching it on Prime, but I love the mix of her elegance, shrewdness, directness and the f-bombs that she occasionally drops with that heavily-accented, gravelly voice.  She's fantastic. lol.

Season 3 is tonight!  Looking forward to it, but also disappointed because I'm used to binge-watching it on Prime, and now it's weekly viewing.  Damn my impatience!   Does anyone know if they drop the entire season somewhere?

Here is a really good overview of the series however there are some mild spoilers.

PostSubject: Re: The Expanse - Syfy   The Expanse - Syfy EmptyFri Apr 20, 2018 3:42 pm

Mr. Pi agreed to forego his first-watch/my re-watch of Season 2 for now so I can proceed, this coming weekend, with the new episodes. Hooray!

Meanwhile, we finished up Season 1, and the details really do warrant rewatching. The season finale blew (blue?) me away. Some of it’s visual stuff, like Miller, looking awful, collapsing onto the circular hatch to the Roci in Vitruvian Man pose (just before he envisions Julie who, of course, turns out to be Amos.) Some of it’s the terrific photography, like the cut from Chrisjen and her husband talking lovingly on the roof, about getting him and the grandkids to safety, to a different angle so it looks like they’re ready to fall off a (vertical) cliff. I’d forgotten just how good the scenes of Miller and Holden making their way to the docks through newly-blued Eros is – the soldier who thinks it’s his lucky day in the Pachinko parlor
In case any new watchers:
, the way Miller and Holden have to redose themselves with anti-radiation meds every time they need a burst of energy, to say nothing of the looks Miller and Holden exchange with each other as they sort of bond. And I'd totally forgotten how they solve...
new watchers:

More to follow after I’ve watched some Season 3!

I've already started season 3 - 2 episodes in. The story is inching forward at the speed of light, well not quite, hehe. It's pretty deep and great character development although I think only two days have passed since the season 2 finale.

Season 3 -- hooray!

Kotyr (Cotye? Gotye?) better be ok. Chrisjen, too! Chrisjen’s banter with him is so great I can’t believe the writers separated those two just for something as mundane as plot ;). And they had to paint over Amos’ great artwork when they changed the name of the Roci to – Pine Tree? Even if you’re trying to hide the fact that you’re flying a warship, naming it after something that is supposed to burn up seems a bit unlucky.

Pastor Anna made a comment about having “a whole other Testament since then” at one point. Does that mean her church is a Mormon one? (I can’t recall if it was just Fred Johnson who referred to the guys prepping the ship Nauvoo as Mormons, so I’ll use that term to mean those guys, and I’m wondering if Anna is part of that group.)

I hate the new name of the ship, Contorta , reminds me of contortionist.  I don't think the ship is that flexible.   Yeah, Nauvoo is a Mormon settlement.  I noticed the big golden statue they mounted on it.  My wife, an ex-Mormon,  almost applauded when the OPA tried to crash it into Eros last season, lol. Pastor Anna, yeah, Elizabeth Mitchell, good to see her again.

PostSubject: Re: The Expanse - Syfy   The Expanse - Syfy EmptyThu May 10, 2018 3:31 am

To be honest, I'm not enjoying this season as much as the first.  It is too encapsulated (pun intended) inside the ships and not much going on outside except for the evil child-torturing scientists on IO.  I miss the variety of settings that were visited in the first season.  There's also less zero G and the graphics aren't as awesome.  We're just 4 episodes in, so hopefully they'll make up for it.

Another thing that isn't working for me are the Earth politics.  I find the characters to be one-dimensional, particularly Errinwight and the Secretary General.  I didn't really buy the fact in a room full of council members that no one  spoke up or interjected anything while the milquetoast UN president was obviously being manipulated by Errinwright to wage an unjustified war. The only other person who interacted with the Sec-Gen unsuccessfully was the Reverend,  (Elizabeth Mitchell).  I think she actually got Chrisjan's message about Errinwright but this was not revisited in Ep 4. She should become very important in future episodes.

I don't know how many episodes are left but so far it has been a rescue mission in slo-mo.  There's a lot going on in the ships, Mars, UNN, all ready to blow each other up from a distance.   It's all good, but it's nothing new.   I'd like to see more of Mars and revisit the Belters' community to break the monotony of space battles.

Bad News for "The Expanse". Syfy won't being renewing it, so it looks like this is the last season unless the fans make a lot of noise and another network picks them up, Netflix?.

Crap. It's Dark Matter all over again. I finally get Amazon Prime, watch the first two seasons, and they go and cancel. Syfy can bite my furry orange ass!

Argh, now we’ll never get backstories on Amos (he did what before going into space? Wearing pumps!?) and Bobbi (what was the deal with her parents?)... and how Southern-fried Alex has an old family recipe for lasagna.

Yes, hopefully the series will get picked up by some provider, maybe even some group with deeper pockets. At least there’s always the books to find out how it all resolves, but details like seeing Mei’s animated backpack and just how ugly Miller’s haircut was have been a definite advantage for tv.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to pick up a copy of Leviathan Wakes and start the book series.  I hope most of the characters from the TV series are in it, particularly Chrisjan and that she's as foul-mouthed as ever.   smile   It'd be nice to have an image of them while reading.

I watched the entire run of Dark Matter. Wish it were still running. The Expanse lost me somewhere around the middle of season 1, despite having the excellent Thomas Jane and an interesting setting (Earth, Mars, The Belt).

The fan reaction to its cancellation has mildly renewed my interest. If it's a slow summer for tv, maybe I'll pick it back up.

I hope you get back to it, Big John. You have yet to see the arrival of Martian Marine Bobbie Draper! And Errinwright’s maneuvering for control of Jules-Pierre Mao’s project, which I won’t say anything more spoilery about, but –!

Here's hoping Amazon continues the series. I'll hold off on the books until we know more.

Does happy cat dance.

So I finally got around to watching the last episode of S2 on Amazon Prime. I stopped after reading that the series was going to get the axe. When the end credits rolled I saw the name Adam Savage listed among the cast. "Mission Specialist....Adam Savage" The only settings in the ep were aboard the Roci, no Mission Specialists there, aboard Daddy Sleazebuck's space yacht, no Mission Specialists there, and aboard the survey ship on Venus orbit over the Eros Crater. That's where he's at, working at a console in the command center, but he has no lines and you never really see his face.

Now to find somewhere to catch up on S3...

It looks like everyone is at different levels of viewing.  So, I don't know about posting.  Should I just put everything in spoiler tags?

Update, I found the current season on YouTube TV, but it's only showing episodes four and onward. Guess I miss out on the first three. Watched 4, 5, and 6. ZOMG....Elizabeth Mitchell!!! I still remember how the Shippers Subforum exploded when Sawyer dove out of Frank's helicopter and waded out of the ocean in nothing but his Levi's right in front of Juliet, sitting watching the smoke from the sinking freighter.

Favorite scene in ep 6, in the airlock of the facility on Io as Prax is about to waste Dr, Strickland...

Amos, pushing down the gun in Prax's hand: You're not that guy
Prax nods, walks away.
Strickland: Thank you
Amos, closing airlock inner door: I'm that guy

Yes, Mei still seems like Mei and I'm glad of it.  However, the mad scientist and Mao had plenty of time to start the injections and I'm afraid they did.  We'll have to be on the look-out for any insight Mei has about the protomolecule.  It may be an indication of communication between it and her.

TBC wrote:

LOL -- nothing new there.  I was completely fooled about his feelings for Mei.  It looked like he really cared about her and I'm guessing he was transferring his feelings for a younger version of his daughter, Julie, to Mei.  So, I was a little surprised and disappointed when he agreed with scum-bucket scientist to go forward with Mei and the protomolecule injections.

That was a great scene.  Amos is one of my favorite characters.  He is who he is and underneath that tough guy exterior, he has a good heart and IMO, is the most trustworthy crew member.

S03E08 "It Reaches Out"  -- Great episode!

So we have twitching bomber girl and the blind saboteur.  It seems evident they are working for the same faction as their actions brought about results which were dependent on each other.  So, the question becomes -- who were they working for?  IMO, it was Dawes -- one half of the Belter leadership.  This seems most likely to me and his man on the Mormon ship (second in command) didn't seem surprised and appeared eager to follow through with taking out the Roci.

Speaking of the blind saboteur ... did his hand glow blue like being infected with the protomolecule or was that just the lighting?  If he is infected, then I would have to say -- he and twitchy girl were being used by the protomolecule to bring about a scenario where the Roci would enter the Ring. This doesn't seem likely to me but it's possible.

Miller!  What a treat to see him again.  Poor Holden -- scanning himself for traces of the protomolecule not once but 35 times!  And Miller -- somehow, I think he could become physically real.  He mumbled something about being constructed, deconstructed and constructed all over again.

And I wondered if I was just dreaming when I seemed to recall that imbedded patch of the protomolecule down below on the Roci.  I wasn't.  It doesn't appear to have grown.  I'm wondering how many other patches there are.  Seems like it was left to establish a communications network or at the very least keep a line open to Miller's friends on the Roci.

I don't think the saboteurs were working for Dawes. My guess is Errinwright's plotting from inside whatever hole the UN has him stashed. The smirk when he was led out of the Sec-Gen's office said "You haven't seen the last of me." Destroy the Roci, discredit the Belters, somewhere in there get Earth and Mars fighting again and overthrow Avasarala. Also, I think that was just lighting on the remote camera guy's hand.

PostSubject: Re: The Expanse - Syfy   The Expanse - Syfy EmptySat Jun 02, 2018 1:07 pm

I don't think it's Dawes either. What would his motivation be to bring the wrath of the UNN and Mars down on his own people?

What I found kind of funny and interesting is that the OPA has commandeered the Mormon ship, Nauvoo, refitted it with weaponry, and renamed it the Behemoth, and yet didn't change the bridge decor.  It still has the ceiling murals of the early Mormon pioneer settlers, stained glass, etc.,  it's still basically a temple.  Maybe the Belters feel that the early Mormons are kindred spirits in their migration to isolated settlements in the far reaches of the Solar system.

After generations in low gravity environments, the Belters are certainly isolated now and treated as inferiors by Earth and Mars because of their physical intolerance to Earth's gravity, which is the whole impetus behind the OPA (outer planets alliance) movement - to have an equal part in interplanetary commerce and politics.

I hope the series addresses the origins of the Belters  and the original leadership and their migration from Earth.   Was it just mainly for work or were there other factors at play such as a persecuted group wanting freedom from certain restrictions?

Whenever I see the Belters I am put in mind of the Belters in Niven's N-Space books. If you are not familiar, that is the literary universe in which the Ringworld and Man-Kzin Wars books are set.

Hey, maybe it was the Mormons who were behind the sabotage because they didn't take kindly to the Belters stealing their ship. lol.

Entertaining idea, the Mormons DO have a lot of money (they fricking OWN Las Vegas!) but they would have no reason to go after the Roci.

Amos is one of my favorite characters and would like to know about his background. Didn't the reporter mention that Amos was a Mob boss a few episodes back? I can see him as a Mob enforcer, not a boss. I don't think he has the "flair" to be a boss, but maybe something happened that changed his personality.

Back in season 2 when the Roci crew was interrogating one of the scientists working on the Proto-molecule, it was revealed that they underwent a procedure that separated their emotions so that they could focus exclusively on work. Amos showed interest in going through that procedure, himself, and by gum, I thought he did, as he was particularly robotic in subsequent episodes. But then he showed compassion and self-sacrifice that broke down that theory. Of course his friendship with Prax showed that his emotions were basically intact even though he is a trained killer.

Amos is one of those sorts with a history which allows him to detach. "I'm that guy." What we know, he had it pretty tough growing up in a bad part of Baltimore...and I would hate to see what Baltimore is like then given what the place is like now...but managed through chance to get out to the Belt. The novels might go into more detail about him.

I'm behind so zipping through here without reading past Episode 6. Since spoiler tags are sort of a pain, maybe folks could start off their comments with the number or name of the episode they most recently watched -- ? Then again, I could stay up late and get up to date on my watching...

I think everyone has enjoyed watching the friendship between Amos and Pax develop. Sandi, I do hope you're wrong about the blue-ing having begun on Mei.

I am current with the exception of having missed the first three episodes of S3 due to their non availability streaming.

Pi-O-My, I'd say a binge watch is in order.   I'm current, S3E9 airs tomorrow and I'm looking forward to it.

I guessed wrong. Turns out twitchy bomber girl is another Mao daughter whose panties are twisted because Daddy loved Julie best. Rolling Eyes

That girl's jealously has led to an insane drive to punish the people responsible for her father being incarcerated. That's got to be Holden and the Roci crew.

So, Miller again. I'm thinking that the Miller Holden sees, is a projected image created by the protomolecule. But I'm wondering if there is some part of Miller that is still "alive"? And what does everyone think about Holden in spacesuit on his way to the center of the ring to investigate a crime scene? And what crime scene could that be?

I would guess she is probably most bent out of shape about the time her assets were frozen. A girl can do without daddy's love but there will be hell to pay if she can't buy everything she wants...At least that is what I learned from Shannon. ;)

Of course if whatever is left of Miller knows that Holden and the rest of the Roci crew are out there then it's a good bet that Julie knows her bratty sister is along for the ride.

Is Holden Dave Bowman? wow. The Martians are an interesting bunch.  Going in head first into an unknown, extremely powerful entity with weapons drawn.  Not the smartest move.

Great episode!  -- Again.

I just want to take a moment and note that Holden looks infinitely better without clothes.  I'm just sayin'.  faint

If Holden is Bowman, does that make Miller, Hal?

I didn't think the Martians would gain entry.  I felt for sure that the protomolecule would deny them entrance, but not the case.  The Martians soldiers do seem fearless and hold a belief in their own military superiority.  So, I'm not surprised, they rushed in (and ignored Bobbi's warnings btw.)

They now appeared subdued after one of their own was obliterated.  What a great visual!  Skeleton to dust and absorbed into the structure!

Am I wrong, didn't that power wave travel throughout the ring, knocking Naomi out and causing some problems on the other crafts?  What happened on the ship with twitchy girl and the reverend?  Were people also knocked out?

Speaking of twitchy girl -- aka Clarissa Mao -- she's caught.  I can't imagine that her guilt at blowing up that ship instead of Holden won't come out at this point or soon hereafter.

What do you think is "the scene of the crime"?

The Expanse - Syfy Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Expanse - Syfy   The Expanse - Syfy EmptySat Jun 16, 2018 2:49 pm

I liked the comparisons of  calculus to amoeba and Monkey to Mozart when Miller pointed out the difference between himself and Holden.

I'm finding Preacher Ana annoying and I have no idea what she is doing on board besides her own curiosity.  I think they originally had representatives from all religions, but they were shuttled out when it became dangerous but she elected to stay.  So she thinks she could have saved her shipmate by just sitting and listening?  He needed a psychologist, not a minister.

If I heard correctly the maximum safe speed in the ring is just over 18,000 kph.  After the detonation of the grenade, the protomol  stopped every ship dead in their tracks.  I don't understand the physics within the ring, but decelerating from 18k to a dead stop at that speed should have resulted in bug splats like we saw with the hotrodder.   Even Miller warns Holden in his jet pack to slow down or the station(?) will squash him like a bug.   But since there's a "safe speed" within the ring, maybe there's also a cushion effect.   It looked like Naomi might be in pretty bad shape and Clarissa and the other woman were knocked to the ceiling.  I'm sure there will be a lot of injuries or death as a result, but I guess no one was pureed like the hotrodder who was travelling many times that speed.

I found it interesting that Miller disappeared when Holden confronted him with Julie then reappeared a few minutes later. I guess Proto needed time to find and download the correct data files for the occasion.

So what were the images in Holden's 2001 experience?  it looked like the protomol was showing its history which involved several solar systems' suns  going supernova and that the protomol might be responsible for that.  Maybe it shows what's in store for Earth's solar system. Is this a warning and does Holden hold the key to prevent it?  Perhaps the protomol  needs to understand why their system should be saved.   Given all the war mongering going on, it might not be in the cards.

Only up through Dandelion Sky, so I'm not yet reading much above this post.

It felt as though they wrapped up the Earth/Mars war problem awfully quickly. I haven't read the books, so I wonder if the tv writers felt under cancellation pressure and needed to condense the story. Errinwright was such a great villain, who made some valid points (not that I agree with him, but he reasoned them well.) I'm hoping Ashford will prove a worthy successor -- the tension between him and Drummer is great!

Isn't "Dandelion Sky" S3E10? If that's the case you are caught up.

I didn't really like Errinwright, thought he was too much of a "moustasche twisting villain" and wasn't impressed with the council members sitting idly by listening to the extremely transparent manipulation of Gillis.

Yes, caught up but not done processing.  32

I also find Anna a bit annoying, but I was starting to like her socialite friend.

I wonder how telling it is that Miller is using "scene of the crime," which sounds ominous, in his analogy. There's a Zen koan quality to Miller's pronouncements that works really well with his detective persona, and I think there's still a good bit of Miller mixed in with the Blue. Hadn't he given up the hat before he re-encountered Julie? How did the protomolecule know to give it back to him? Also, I'm wondering if there was still some of Katoa in the Blue guy who paused a moment before killing Bobbi. That's the second time a Blue paused when it had her dead to rights, right?
