I am enjoying this continuation. Tonite's episode was pretty darn good IMO, I love seeing the dynamic of 3 generations interacting.

I love it too. like I mentioned in another post - the laugh track is terrible but like another poster said - maybe we're just not used to laugh tracks much anymore.

Jackie and Roseanne are fabulous.  Jackie is just like her mother lol

MAN this is great, last night's show is generating quite the conversations. I follow the Roseanne thread on Previously TV's site, and everyone is going back and forth on the sink scene. Love it!

(My 2 cents - harmless. You have people over there bantering the term 'corporal punishment' - that is by NO means corporal punishment, getting your hair showered in a sink. It was meant to embarrass Harris, which it did, with no harm done. I see ZERO wrong with that.)

My wife watches it and told me that the two actresses who played the daughter are in it, one as a surrogate for the other and they commented on how they look alike.  I got a chuckle out of that.

I've learned to be a tough love giver - Mia (new pet cat) is constantly wanting to be in my lap while I'm at my PC, so I keep having to move her to a different seat. I KNOW I KNOW, that's a contentious step I'm taking, but dammit I'm firm in my resolve.

MAN, I had to bail on the Roseanne thread on PreviouslyTV. Such an uproar over something so minor, people are now quoting news sites in support of this "unreasonable behavior". I knew people nowadays are more delicate, but MAN I did not realize it was this level of bubble protection. My school days would have horrified them to no end (and yes granted I'm now a serial killer, but that has no bearing here nor there.)
I'm tempted to start a parenting thread to compare NOW vs THEN and the merits of both.

There isn't much I find funny anymore. Roseanne lands squarely in that territory. I think a sitcom which is nothing but people falling down and having accidents might possibly make me giggle a bit.

Interesting episode last night, touching on middle east relations. Nothing deep mind you, the usual feel good Roseanne defends her new neighbors to racist Lanford. Touched on DJ being a veteran and possibly having PTSD.

I will say half hour isn't really long enough to develop those storylines (esp aft commercials.) Maybe they could've done a two parter.

I've been watching the show (even though I blasted Roseanne's dippy political thinking on some previous network) and the show's fine. It's more ironically funny than laugh out loud funny, but i think that old show was like that for me too. At least DJ gets a story, and an interesting one, if cursory. His working with Dan was kind of nice. The story about the neighbors was fine, typical Roseanne, the more you know people the less you hate them, except the reserve isn't automatically true, as in the husband's paying back Roseanne's loan at 2am and feeling superior about it. There was an oblique reference to Dan losing a contract to a firm that hires the undocumented, and the show blames the hirer more, which is convenient I guess, although I wonder if Sara Gilbert or someone put a lid on flamethrowing against Latinos. As in no Wall jokes. Darlene or someone could have said maybe Trump's Mystical Magical Wall will be built faster and cheaper if the govt brings in the undocumented to do it because Trump voters looking for this miracle would want benefits or a sign on bonus as though they were baseball players or something or they won't even apply. Anyway, the show's fine. But Darlene needs even funnier lines like the old days. However, as I suggest, Sara Gilbert is probably too busy doing, well, you know.

They have to be careful, it can’t look too obvious that the show only exists for political purposes.

congrats on a new kitty ZoW!

I was only a lukewarm fan of the first Roseanne. Never went out of my way to watch it. I'm actually finding this reboot somewhat funny. I mean it's not comedic genius but it's cute and snarky. And yes, pretty political, but the Will and Grace reboot gets political too and I love that show, so hey, whatever.

Roseanne, the show, is kind of ironically self-aware. It doesn't have jokes as such. It has ironic twists to earlier statements or positions.

As for Will and Grace, I liked Karen and Jack way more than W&G. I haven't watched the reboot. Maybe I will.

And yes, they don't want to make Roseanne into a political debate, and I think for the most part people's political attitudes groove well with their characters. From what I heard, one of Sara Gilbert's jobs is to keep the peace in terms of production. I did like it when Darlene threw the brownie. However it's the phone that got stepped on. Ironic twist. Family will deliberately drive you crazy until they do again but ironically accidentally. I just think a Wall joke would have been good, because that was Trump's biggest campaign mantra. Instead, they cheapen it a little by saying not to use the term illegal before they get their lunch at the hacienda where Becky works. I think a joke like: Becky what's the construction going on in the parking lot? And Becky says: I don't know, Dad. And Darlene says: Maybe it's a wall to keep out culturally appropriating Anglos. And Dan says: Well, it's not working. And Darlene says: Exactly.

Roseanne the character addicted to pain pills! If taken from the real Roseanne's personal experience, that might explain her dippy adoration of Trump. Or she might have money in the Trump/China/Indonesia resort America First scam fest! No, she's not that bright. It's gotta be pills.

Anyway, I found the episode dull. The only interesting story was Becky vs Darlene as to who should apply for a job requiring flamboyant attire. Dan and Darlene had a good side conversation about that as well. I wish this was the whole episode.

I don't mind the pain pill addiction storyline, in light of the growing opiod problem. Tho yeah it's not really a funny topic - Roseanne seems to wanna cover both the serious side of life and the humorous one.

Ok I'm weird but I thought Crystal was cute in that little costume.

I like Crystal. I wish she had more screentime. In the earlier incarnation, Roseanne and Crystal (and others) would have interesting talks about what the future holds. That hotel scene could have been bumped for that.

I don't have a problem discussing opioids as such, seriously or humorously, I just don't think the show carried it off. The scene where Roseanne made sure her extra stash was still in the freezer was the most interesting part, and that required no dialog at all. I think a build up of Roseanne hiding her stashes might have helped in terms of a payoff. And if insurance was a big issue, then again Roseanne, why Trump?

Decent ending to the season, if not wrapped up by a disaster bow somewhat. I like the chemistry between Chuck and Dan, they play really well of each other. The dinner scene at the end I didn't get as an ahhh moment, more this is an awkward way to end this show. But as others have said, they might not have been planning on being renewed and so were closely gently.

Nice that the new job is motivating Darlene to go back to writing, and she's getting morale support from Harris.

AH man I was hoping DJ would actually get a trick to work for once...

I'm sorry but the joke against the former aide of President Obama was beyond offensive. It was vile. Her other tweets were generally nuts as well as vulgar. Certainly accusing someone of handing Jews over to Nazis??? I mean the accusation is bad in and of itself but the chronology of the accusation is seriously questionable. Where is Roseanne getting her historical data from? Oh I forgot. Trump.

When the NFL relinquishes control of kneeling players, then I will say to ABC/Disney hey give the tweeting racist a pass.

There is room for a Roseanne show somewhere. Maybe after Fox and Friends or Sean Hannity. Or somewhere I won't be watching. Roseanne sorry. Enjoy your continuing saga on Twitter. Maybe you can join the Trump administration. As Secretary of Insanity.

Seriously though, I enjoyed the show more than I thought I would. I would have restructured the show to promote the kids and the grandkids more but generally I found myself smiling at the humor and the rhythm of the show. Ironically smiling. Not out loud laughing. Ever. It was never that kind of show to begin with. Back in the day, and even now, it was making points, and then turning those points inside out and upside down. Now the whole Roseanne enterprise is a sinking ship because of bullet holes fired from Roseanne's own gun of a mouth. I hope some of the other people fare better professionally and aren't tarnished by association. Laurie Metcaffe should stick to movies and theater. She's a good actress. She was nominated for Ladybird. As for the kids and grandkids? Well, paychecks are not horrible. Take the money and try to do something better. Maybe a spin-off. Called? Children Of The Barr? She-Tweeter: My Years in Therapy? Whatever. Just let the last sight of crazy old mom be her hand sticking out of the water---and---sending that one last tweet about---about---all those jobs being saved in China and Indonesia America.

I have said and done vile things, would the crowd like to ban me from here? For some reason people are upset as it was a popular show and apparently starring in a show means you represent the views of your parent company. what a total load. stars are people, they fuck up, probably more than the rest of us. vilify the act, not the person. pretty sure our clinton did some nasty vile things to one of his aids, and there wasn't near the level of uproar this is getting.

I agree that it sucks from a standpoint of the show was enjoyable for some...I watched it. But she *is* an employee of the station and company, and there are limits to what a person can do or say without repercussions.

I'm an independent contractor at my gym and my classes are very popular, but I'm pretty sure they'd let me go if I started spewing racist crap.

I do feel bad for the employees associated with the show.

I only saw the first episode. I thought the Darlene story line could really have drawn in a new audience (how a younger person tries to rebuild when everything keeps collapsing), since that's happening in a lot of families. She seemed to be bringing both humor and depth to it. I didn't get to know the other characters, other than always loving Laurie Metcalfe and John Goodman.

I saw a tweet somewhere: Consult your doctor before taking ambien. If you experience the side effect of racism then maybe ambien isn't right for you. Or something like that. I laughed.

Roseanne is now mad that members of her tv show family are now criticizing her for her statements. She calls this throwing her under the bus. I call this people finally waking up.

I heard about this too. The question is how much ownership Roseanne herself would still have. Does she have some ownership over the characters created on the show? If so, could she halt it? Or would she have to be paid off so to speak? One solution proposed, I guess, is to use the same actors but create entirely new characters and situations? I don't know how this would work exactly. Something like AHS: Roseanne? I'd almost say pay her off except that there would be an immediate outcry and consequential loss of advertising revenue. They could parody the former Roseanne show---they could say for instance their mother died in an auto wreck in Charlottesville. And they all could just live in some other town. Maybe in Indiana. Then they could do a bunch of Pence jokes. I almost don't see John Goodman or Laurie Metcaffe going for anything. If they do, then fine. But here's a chance maybe to focus on the kids and their kids with and without Roseanne's filming and tweeting shadow hanging over them. I don't know. It's a tough gig regardless. I'd almost try it just to see the publicity shitstorm that would explode from Roseanne twitter account after another round of racism induced ambien.

I've always liked John Goodman, particularly in films, so I wouldn't mind seeing him in something completely different. I think it would be a lost cause to go for a spin-off.

Continuing a show after it's titluar character's been replaced is not unprecedented. There was Valerie back in the 80's.

was it here we were discussing a show where Darlene could be a teacher of a class? her talent with the snarkiness would make it an interesting dynamic.

I don't know what role I'd cast Goodman in - his movie roles have been quite varied. it wouldn't have to be a comedy. same for Metcalf, in fact she may do better in a serious role.

WAIT got it - Goodman on Criminal Minds or NCIS. I could buy either of those roles, and him interacting with Dr Reid could offer some comedic lines.

Jackie played by Sarah Paulson in American Horror Story: Roseanne. Roseanne promises to give up Tweeting and Trump for the sake of fellow castmates and crew. But it's all a trap! The new Roseanne set is at Club Maralago. There Roseanne played by Kathy Bates and Trump played by John Carroll Lynch pick off the cast and crew one by one. DJ played by Evan Peters is literally thrown under a bus transporting chained up illegals after walking to a job site where Trump has promised him work. Trump taunts DJ for being weak and not surviving the bus running over him a dozen times. DJ is then processed into cement and becomes part of the Mexican Border Wall. Darlene played by Angela Bassett presses the liberal social media app but it's really the fake news media app in disguise. Darlene is transported into some kind of app interspace where all of Roseanne's past tweets (and current tweets 'cause you know she ain't gonna give that up) chase Darlene into a movie called Planet of the Roseanne Brotherhood where Roseanne's tweets ultimately turn Darlene into a paranoid mess. Darlene ultimately uses her phone to make insane ambien tweets until she herself is turned into one massive tweet which literally blows up herself and the internet. Jackie played by Sarah Paulson is locked in an oversized coffin with her mother played by Frances Conroy. There is so much screaming by both of them that the oxygen quickly runs out. In a cameo appearance Beatrix Kiddo played by Lady Gaga is punching the bejesus out of the lid of her coffin in a neighboring grave. While escaping she's singing the song Judas from the Born This Way album. As for the fate of the rest of the cast and crew, Ryan Murphy hasn't told me anything. Not even in his sleep.

WAIT got it - Goodman on Criminal Minds or NCIS. I could buy either of those roles, and him interacting with Dr Reid could offer some comedic lines.

Dan as Linda Tripp, the new director of NCIS. She has either a past or future romantic involvement with Leroy Jethro Gibbs. hug

Here's my two cents...

Roseanne's tweet was flat-out racist and indefensible.

I've lived with people taking Ambien, and it can have some really fucked up side effects. I've seen people i loved do things that they would never in a million years do, have no memory of it, and disbelieve me when i told them about their actions. I've heard them say things that i know for a fact they don't believe. One woman called me by six different names, none of them mine, within a ten-minute period. I absolutely can believe that somebody on Ambien could post a fucked up racist tweet without being at all racist, and have no memory of it whatsoever.

With that said, i don't know if Barr is a racist or not, and i don't really care either way. If she's not really a racist, then it's a bit of a shame that she hasn't learned that Ambien isn't the right sleep med for her. I have noticed a distinct lack of denial from her that she's a racist, she seems more regretful that her judgment slipped enough for her to actually post that shit. In that case, i'm glad she's out of the closet. I don't really feel bad for the other cast and crew, i'm sure they'll do just fine in other projects.

When this reboot was announced, my initial feeling was shock that Gilbert would work with Barr again. But i remembered that Sara likes to start dialogue, often with people with whom she disagrees; that's one of the things i admire about her. I also learned that she would have considerable creative input, and was mildly intrigued, although tbh i haven't watched any of the reboot even though i adore Goodman (never would've been interested AT ALL if Tom Arnold was taking the male lead) and highly respect Metcalf. Now i kinda wish i'd watched at least a few episodes, as this abrupt ending makes wide syndication unlikely imo.

Roseanne is entitled to her opinion, vile as i may find it, and i'm generally not a fan of workplaces punishing employees for shit they do on their own time. I can understand why ABC/Disney made the decision they did, and i think it likely that they made that decision based on business principles rather than an emotional response to the tweet itself, and i can respect that.

A lot of people are pissed at ABC/Disney for their choice, and those folks are entitled to their opinions too. Barr kinda put ABC/Disney in a position where they were going to face blowback regardless of which way they went. I don't think their decision was motivated by ethics but rather by business sense.

What kinda dumbfounds me, though, is that so many of the people pissed off at ABC/Disney are the same folks hailing the NFL's no kneeling during the anthem ruling. A racist tweet that wasn't part of the show is okay by them, but a peaceful protest of racial inequality that wasn't during the game is not? Keep in mind that the networks never showed the anthem ceremony until CK started kneeling during them, except during the SuperBowl, and there were plenty of instances of players not standing during those, but as it wasn't presented as a political statement it was okay. It's terrible that a privately owned company doesn't want their brand associated with racism but it's great that a different privately owned company doesn't want their brand associated with protesting racism?

To me, Roseanne and Kaepernick are in the same situation for the same reason. They spoke their minds and no longer have their jobs as a result. The fact that i agree with one of them and not the other doesn't change the level of sympathy i have for either.
