PostSubject: Supergroups   Sat Oct 06, 2018 11:27 pm

This is a thread for posting about Supergroups. I'd like to know about Supergroups you've enjoyed, the ones you didn't enjoy, and also about Supergroups you wish could have been assembled.

I'd like to state that there are no "rules" on fantasy constructions. Does it sound fun to you to hear Janis Joplin sing with Justin Timberlake? Let me know, then! If you want to impose rules/structures on your fantasy posts, that's cool too, and please feel free to share those constraints with us. I think the most interesting combos will result from some kind of restrictions, but i'm prepared to be wrong.

I'll start with an example of a real Supergroup and a personal fantasy Supergroup:

Real Supergroup:

Traveling Wilburys: Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr & George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, and Tom Petty. And it worked.

Many years ago, a local radio station asked people to mail fax or email in their suggestions for the greatest fantasy rock supergroup that never was. Each submission was allowed five members: Vocals, Lead Guitar, Bass, Drums, and "Wild Card." Those are the rules/structure for my first fantasy submission:

Vocals: Roy Orbison
Lead Guitar: Frank Zappa
Bass: Steve Harris (Les Claypool VERY close second)
Drums: Stuart Copeland
"Wild Card:" Steve Windwood

Coverdale Page, outstanding rock album. Alas, they only released the one album.

San Francisco Symphony & Metallica, their S&M album was utterly fantastic!

My supergroup would be

Kurt Cbain - vocals
Randy Rhodes - lead guitar
Roger Waters - bass guitar/vocals
Lars Ulrich - percussion
Clarence Clemons - saxophone
Brian Eno - keyboards

I'll have to think about this, but one of my favorite real Supergroups was shown in "The Last Waltz", The Band's send off which featured the variety of musicians that they worked with.

I've never heard the Metallica & SFSO before, but the rest of those are all fantastic examples.

Interesting fantasy selection, JC. There are a LOT of great possibilities there. I honestly have no idea how Cobain was about the possibility of sharing mic time, but i can definitely see he and Waters making some fantastic duets, especially with Waters taking a "comforting" type role to contrast with Kurt's more aggressive style, as Waters did with David Gilmour on some of Pink Floyd's signature songs.

One supergroup that i somewhat enjoy, but who mostly disappointed me is Never Trust Anyone Named Oysterhead (often referred to as Oysterhead for short). They're a trio consisting of Trey Anastasio (Phish guitar/singer/songwriter et al), Les Claypool (Primus singer/bassist/songwriter et al), and Stuart Copeland (The Police drummer/songwriter et al).

I think that a lot Supergroups that try too hard to be music's version of an All-Star team often don't do that well, and Oysterhead definitely fits that category in my opinion.

I'll advance another fantasy selection, and stay in the rock genre for now; as far as i know, all of these artists were reputed to be easy to work with and not particularly limelight hogs, but they're all phenomenal musicians and they come from wildly disparate genres. I have no idea what kind of music they would make together, but i bet it would've been awesome:

Vocals: John Doe (X, The Knitters, solo, et al)
Guitar: Brian May (Queen, solo, et al)
Banjo: Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia Band, Old and In The Way, et al)
Bass: Mike Watt (Minutemen, The Stooges, solo, et al)
Drums: Raymond Herrera (Fear Factory et al)

I think they could be called Collage Bonanza Extraordinaire!

Most powerful music I've ever heard. As time permits, you should treat yourself to the entire concert. You don't have to be a Metallica fan to appreciate the artistry.

Oooh, Mr. Bill, that could be fun. They're all strong singers, imagine some of the sick harmonic stuff they could do! They've all done collaborative vocal stuff before, too. Cool theme.

I never knew Chicago was a supergroup. Blind Faith and EL&P are both great examples; particularly fond of Blind Faith personally.

Were Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel each famous before they paired up?

Too bad there's not a computer program out there like "Fantasy Football" that can take samples of each musicians' styles and vocals and mash it up (in a cool way).  That would be amazing,   lol.

Of course there was that collaborative concert in '86 with Jagger,  Bowie, McCartney and Elton John in Dancing in the Streets. Now that's a supergroup.

Another great one, Comfortably Numb -  Bowie, Gilmour and Wright in 2006.   Unfortunately it will never happen again.
