| 08:15 AM ET 04.10 | Much of what ails the Phillies can be summed up thusly: Roy Halladay ranks second on the team in batting average. This may be the greatest danger of losing [Cole Hamels], the sense of a team in decline. Some reports speculate that he wants 7 years in his next contract, but he very clearly wants to win, too. He cares far more about that than the color or design of any uniform or the climate of any town, and that includes those located in Southern California. You want to be scared, here's a better way to scare you: His father is from South Boston. ... Earlier this spring Hamels complained, jokingly, that any time he gets a bunch of tickets when the Phillies play up there, his guests arrive in Red Sox hats and gear.

| 08:11 AM ET 04.10 | There may be worse news for Cubs fans who have already seen the struggles of Kerry Wood and Carlos Marmol to open the season. The team is years away from contention. Savvy fans probably knew that already, but both the amateur draft and free-agent market are becoming more difficult for high-revenue teams to exploit, complicating the Cubs' rebuilding efforts. The new restrictions on draft spending, combined with the smaller number of stars reaching free agency, amount to a double whammy for Theo Epstein and his new front office. ... Scout well, spend big on the draft -- that was Epstein's plan with the Cubs. Only now, it's not going to happen.
GREAT NEWS! sigh |

yeah, he said somethings after the game yesterday that leads people to believe that he's changing his mind about signing here. Even before this season's problems, they didn't score for him. He loses a lot of 1 run games because there is just no room for error. I thought Lee's deal would be enough but now that Cain got more, Hamels will want more |
