Ausiello: Back to Shirley’s brood. Two of her sons will return in this season’s fifth episode, only they’ll be older (early teens) and, per casting intel, with “lovely singing voices.” The benched NBC comedy is also on the lookout for an actor to play a student reporter, who is seen grilling a faculty member during a time of crisis. BTW, I think this is Donald Glover’s final episode, so the “crisis” part has me a smidge worried. They wouldn’t kill off Troy, would they?

"Community" is about to get the king of "Castle" as a guest star. Nathan Fillion is set to appear in an episode of Season 5. Find out who he will be playing here.

We're not talking about a mystery writer or a futuristic space captain here either. Fillion will instead be playing a lowly custodian (as reported by Deadline). Annie (Alison Brie) and Professor Hickey (guest star Jonathan Banks) meet Fillion's character, Bob Waite, when the student and teacher team up to navigate Greendale Community College's network of power.

You see, Bob isn't just any lowly collector of trash cans -- he is the politically savvy head custodian at the school. Considering how powerful the air conditioning repair annex is at Greendale, you can imagine what power the custodial staff yields.

Fillion -- who is also known for playing the lead role of Malcolm Reynolds on "Firefly" -- is just one of many big-name guest stars coming to "Community" in Season 5. Others confirmed include LeVar Burton, John Oliver, Walton Goggins and Rob Corddry.

"Community" does not yet have an airdate on NBC.

"Community" Season 5 will welcome back LeVar Burton for an episode, according to the actor's Twitter feed. This will be Burton's second appearance on the show. He will probably still traumatize Troy this time around.

The unofficial announcement about Burton's return was posted late on Monday (Sept. 16) to Burton's Twitter page:

"Romping through Greendale with @DonaldGlover #bydhttmwfi"

There was no information about why LeVar Burton would return to Greendale, but it's a big positive that the man will at least be hanging around Donald Glover and his character of Troy.

Burton first appeared on "Community" back in 2011 for Season 2's "Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking" episode. In that installment, the actor played himself, hired by Pierce Hawthorne (Chevy Chase) as a "present" for Troy Barnes. This was meant to be a touching bequeathal from a supposedly dying man (he wasn't really) to a frind.

In reality, the arrival of Burton was meant only to traumatize Troy. You see, the young man so idolized the "Reading Rainbow" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation" actor that he couldn't speak in Burton's presence, for fear of disappointing the man. All Troy had really wanted was a picture -- "You can't disappoint a picture!"

He commanded fear and respect as a hitman/fixer on Breaking Bad, and now he will command fear and respect as… a community college professor. Jonathan Banks will appear in 11 episodes of Community‘s fifth season, EW has learned.

Banks, who earned a Supporting Actor Emmy nomination this summer for his work on Breaking Bad, will tackle the role of Pat Nichols, an intense criminology professor with a mysterious background in military and police work. The Wiseguy alum makes his first appearance in the second episode of the season when Annie (Alison Brie) enrolls in his class.
Banks popped up on another NBC comedy last season, playing the father of Ben (Adam Scott) on Parks and Recreation.
His boss on Breaking Bad, Giancarlo Esposito, has also guest-starred on Community

Walton Goggins, best known for playing the brilliant outlaw Boyd Crowder on "Justified," will be stopping in to visit "Community" during Season 5.

Goggins' character is a mysterious and emotionless man named Mr. Stone, according to TV Guide. The study group encounters Stone at some point and are confronted with "a dangerous accusation, a tantalizing offer and a devious plan that will change the group forever."

This being "Community," that description could mean anything. Literally anything.

There is no word yet on when Goggins' episode will air, but the episode is scheduled to start production next week. Presumably, this is a one-episode guest-starring role.

Whoever Goggins may be on "Community," he is in good company. Morally corrupt men from critically acclaimed dramas seem to frequent the odd little NBC comedy. Previous guest stars include Giancarlo Esposito and Jonathan Banks (both of "Breaking Bad"), Michael K. Williams ("The Wire"), Patton Oswalt (also from "Justified") and Josh Holloway ("Lost").

"Community" Season 5 will premiere at some as-yet-undetermined point during the 2013-2014 season on NBC.

"Community" Season 5 will see the return of one of its most distasteful (in a funny way, of course) characters. Rob Corddry ("Children's Hospital") will return to play the role of Alan Connor in the upcoming season's premiere episode (as reported by TVLine).

The character of Alan Connor appeared several times on "Community" in the past, most recently in the show's Season 3 finale. A lawyer and former colleague of Jeff Winger (Joel McHale), Alan's main purpose has been to bring Jeff back to the dark side of the law. He also has done things like represent Pierce Hawthorne in a community college-based lawsuit.

Why will Alan return in Season 5? Considering that Jeff has finally managed to get that college degree -- thereby allowing him to work as lawyer again -- it's possible that Alan could show up in a work situation. He may also be back to his recruiting ways, no matter where Jeff's career path has taken him.

Whatever the case, Corddry's character will probably be interacting with the other characters at Greendale Community College. After all, there's no chance that Jeff Winger will stray from the safety of his study-room fold.

No date has been set for the "Community" Season 5 return, but new episodes are most likely expected in the winter of 2014.

Despite the show's many ups and downs, "Community" fans were shocked to learn that Donald Glover was leaving the show after only five episodes of Season 5. Creator and newly reinstated showrunner Dan Harmon seems to have been fairly shocked as well, based on his response when asked about the loss of Troy.

What does the always verbose Harmon have to say about Glover's departure?

The information about Harmon's feelings on the matter comes from an interview the writer/producer gave with TVLine during the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con. Among other aspects of Season 5, the issue of Glover's departure came up.

Dan Harmon seemed mostly sad but supportive about the whole situation.

"Eh, what did he ever do? He just says his funny lines," Harmon joked before adding: "No, it's devastating. It's heart-wrenching." That's not to say that the writer is bitter about one of his popular "Community" characters jumping ship halfway through Season 5. "He has my absolute, full support doing whatever he wants to do," Harmon explained. "He is one of the most intimidatingly talented people I have ever had the pleasure of writing words for."

In true Harmonian fashion, talk of tragedy soon turned ludicrous. "Troy is -- it's like the left arm being removed from your body. How are you going to handle it? What are you going to do?" Dan Harmon joked. "You have to learn to do one-armed push-ups."

Despite all of this, it doesn't sound like "Community" will cease to function without a member of the cast. The show will, in fact, be more likely to use the loss as fuel for more insane fire. As Harmon put it, "We're going to charge in! We're going to make eye contact with the tragedy that is his departure. We're going to turn it into a story, and we're gonna feel the feels and laugh the laughs."

It's not clear exactly how the character of Troy will be written out of the show, but his departure will be complete. Glover will appear in the first five episodes of Season 5 before leaving completely. "We're gonna do it like a train of pain," Harmon put it. "No, a train of pleasure, followed with a caboose of pain."

Glover's upcoming departure marks the second time a major cast member will leave "Community." Chevy Chase notably left the program midway through Season 4 due to differences with the production. There is no indication that Chase will return for Season 5

"Community" returned triumphant for its panel at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday (July 21).

New Coke, McRib, Twinkies and "Community."

Yes, that's how they started the panel. If that weren't hyperbole enough, creator and reinstated showrunner Dan Harmon arrived on stage in an Iron Man costume. Like a full Iron Man costume. He pretended to fly on the stage.

"I am billionaire playboy and creator Dan Harmon." - Dan Harmon

Oh, and they're not satisfied with five seasons. Six seasons and a movie is a go -- they still want the #sixseasonsandamovie hashtag out there. Seriously, that's the party line from this panel. There will be six seasons if the "Community" people can make it happen.

As for the panel itself, Jim Rash, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Danny Pudi and Gillian Jacobs with writers/producers Dan Harmon and Chris McKenna were on the stage with the Nerdist himself, Chris Hardwick, as moderator.

Im sad Troy is leaving. he's awesome.  He's a rapper now though - the boy showed me a few songs. he's not bad... but all i can hear is Troy! so i cant take it seriously lol

I don't think they are making his exit sad tho.. I have read rumors they are killing him off, but I can't imagine they would ever do that he prolly just graduates and moves on

Ausiello: Nothing that involves heavy petting (or even light petting), and that seems to be by design. “Overall, it’s been a less romance-heavy season,” Gillian Jacobs tells us. “It’s more about each of us having adventures together or in pairs, but not as much romance.” That said, in Episode 2, Annie takes measures to be “closer” to (or keep an eye on?) Jeff, while Episode 3 reveals that, in certain situations, she calls Jeff her “uncle.”
