Castle Rock Timeline

I think a timeline could be of benefit to those of us discussing this show -- so I'm starting one.  

Since this anthology series spans the SK Castle Rock universe over a number of decades and I'm not sure how many characters can be included in a post, I've decided to reserve a number of posts, so the timeline doesn't get separated by discussion or pages.

Please post any timeline information you come across.  Note the source, whether it's an image, something from an episode or a screencap in your post.

I'll update the timeline periodically to reflect any new timeline info we gather.

Timeline past up to and including 1959.

Timeline 1960 up to and including 1989.

1961
Body of boy found by railroad tracks - (This would be Ray Brower from the movie "The Stand" or novella, "The Body".)  Four friends, Gordie Lachance, Chris Chambers, Teddy Duchamp, and Vern Tessio set off to view Brower's body (as yet undiscovered by authorities).  Older teens, all bullies, also look to be the ones to discover the body -- older teens -- John "Ace" Merrill, Richard "Eyeball" Chambers, Vince Desjardins, Billy Tessio, Charlie Hogan.
Fall
Dale Lacy takes hard hit in highschool football game.  Same game -- Dale's brother, dressed as team mascot (cougar) commits suicide by jumping off of highschool roof.


1975

• Shawshank Penitentiary Warden Norton commits suicide/gunshot.
  
• The strangler, Frank Dodd, commits suicide.  (Lacy mentions The Strangler and Molly says she lives in the house where The Strangler died.)  The Strangler, Frank Dodd, is a character from the book and movie, "The Dead Zone".  Sheriff George Bannerman with the help of psychic John Smith, uncover Bannerman's deputy, Frank Dodd as the strangler responsible for a string of rape/murders.  Dodd commits suicide before being arrested.

September
27 - Henry Deaver born  (unknown birth name/details)

1980
Summer
Rabid Dog claimed a total of four victims, Joe Cambers and Garold Pervier.  Also the rabid dog, trapped four-year-old Tad Trenton and his mother, Donna Trenton in their vehicle for two days.  Tad Trenton died due to the summer heat. The dog also killed Sheriff George Bannerman when he attempted to rescue the Trentons.  (From a clipping in Lacy's home file.)  (Based on the book and movie, "Cujo" -- which is set in the summer of 1980.)

Rev. Matthew Deaver leads a Bible Study Group at Shawshank Prison

Five year old Henry Deaver (unknown birth name) adopted by Rev. Matthew Deaver and Ruth Deaver

25 -  Cell Block F at Shawshank Prison is destroyed in Christmas fire.

• Molly and Henry signal each other from their houses at night.
  
• Molly writes Henry Deaver over and over again in notebook
  
• @ 2:17 AM, Molly wakes and sees Henry (in red hoodie) no snow - and Rev. Deaver drive away on one of their "camping" trips.

A series of explosions shook the Castle Rock downtown area.  An all-consuming fire ravaged downtown destroying many of the shops including an Oddity Store owned by Leland Gaunt.  Witnesses claimed to have seen Gaunt leaving town. (This info is from a news clipping in Lacy's home file.)  (All based on the book and movie, "Needful Things".  Per the book/movie -- Alan Pangborn was the Sheriff at the time.  Prior to the explosions and fire, many deaths occurred due to town on town violence.)

January
10 through 20

• Molly shivers under blankets in room and is questioned by police.  As of this instance, Rev. Deacon has been recovered and is in critical condition.
  
• Rev. Deaver dies -- "Half the state's out looking for him ... middle of winter ... and what they find is his father -- half-froze, and his back's broken.  Doesn't last three days." S01E01 per Dep Warden Reeves

21 - Monday - Should be the Day Henry Deaver was found as he was missing for 11 days making the next day (the 21st) being the day found. Alan Pangborn finds missing 11 yr old Henry Deaver, who has no prior memory and is secretly clutching a statue similar to the one No Name carves in 2018.
21 through 31
Sheriff Pangborn pulls Lacy's car over and finds NN in trunk.  Pangborn buys into Lacy's reason, closes trunk, leaving NN in there.


1993
Leanne Gaitskill sentenced to death (found guilty in husband, Richard Chambers' death)

1 - Ruth and Pangborn bury neighborhood mutt in suitcase in Ruth's backyard. (Dog killed by truck in accident.)


September

• Warden Lacy visits No Name in cage and tells him when he is found ask for Henry Matthew Deaver.  (This could have happened between Lacy preparing breakfast for his wife and his suicide on his last day of work.)
  
• Warden Lacy prepares breakfast for wife and tells her he's going to his retirement party.
  
• Warden Lacy goes to Castle Lake bluff (where Henry was found back in 1991) commits suicide.
  
• Day A1 - Leanne is executed (more than once)
  
• Day A2 - New Warden Porter arrives at Shawshank and looks at space to house more inmates.  (Reeves mentions Lacy's funeral as already happened.)
  
• Day A2 - Zalewski mentions Block F which has been vacant since fire Christmas 1987.  Tasked with checking out Block F.
  
• Day A2 - Zalewski finds No Name down a hole and in a cage. NN is fingerprinted/showers.  When asked his name, NN says Henry Matthew Deaver.

• Day A2 - Henry visits Gator Farm (honoring Leanne's memory as child) and while there receives phone call from Zalewski @ Shawshank asking for help for No Name.  (Henry is wearing same suit, shirt and tie as Leeanne's execution.  He appears bleary eyed and has a bottle in a brown paper bag.  This indicates he left execution, began drinking and hitched a ride to the alligator farm Leanne talked about.)
  

25 - Tuesday

• Molly Strand buys 8 pills ("fivers" for $40) had wanted more and promised to pay balance by "Thursday" but Derek only gave her what her $40 would buy.
  
• Henry Deaver arrives by bus in Castle Rock.
  
• Molly sees Henry and quickly drives away; parks and takes 1/2 pill.
  
• Henry visits Church where his father, Rev. Deaver practiced and finds an asphalt lot where his grave should be.
  
• Henry goes to childhood home and finds mother, Ruth, with serious memory issues and the Caregiver he had arranged is no where around. (Note: When Henry first sees Ruth, she's out in the garden next to the woods, spreading de-icing rock salt on the ground.)
  
• Henry finds Alan Pangborn living with his mother and taking care of her affairs.  He informs Henry that Rev. Deaver's grave was moved to somewhere near Bangor.
  
• Henry visits Shawshank and the Warden stonewalls him. (Henry is wearing the same suit and blue shirt he arrived in town wearing.)
  
• When leaving Shawshank, Henry spies Zalewski and by their shared looks, Henry knows Zalewski is the one who called him.
  
• Night time -- Back at home, Henry enters his bedroom and drops his bag.  Looks around as if he hasn't been in the room for a long time.  Looks out window and sees light dim in Molly's parents' house.   Changes clothes -- long sleeve sweatshirt or thin sweater with V pattern at neck.
  
• Downstairs -- Henry discusses Warden Lacy's suicide with Pangborn and is told the suicide site is the bluff where he was found in 1991.
  
• Henry drives up to Castle Rock Lake bluff.
  
• At her parents' house -- Molly Strand goes down to the basement; retrieves box and handles contents -- toy hourglass; Henry's 1991 Missing poster and Henry's red plaid hoodie from that time.  (Still wearing the same two necklaces she had on in the morning and an thin blouse over the cami she wore that day.)
  
• Henry finds an informal Warden Lacy memorial by a tree on the bluff and looking up, sees that it is snowing.  He walks over to the edge of the bluff (the ground is now covered with snow.)  We see 11 yr old Henry (back to us) looking at adult Henry.  Sensing something, adult Henry turns around, but 11 yr old Henry and snow is gone.
  
• Zalewski is in security booth at Shawshank and monitors are suddenly showing No Name's empty cell, No Name looking into the camera, screens flickering/or with snow and then most of the monitors show dead guards covered or laying in blood.  Zalewski hits the alarm/almost shoots Guard Boyd/and finds none of the events before sounding alarm happened.
  

26 - Wednesday

• Henry visits Lacy Home
  
• Henry Deaver visits the church "the Incarnation"  Pastor reminds people they'll collect their engraved Bibles Sunday at ten.
  
• Shawshank Prison -- Zalewski removes NN's untouched food tray -- talks about being in a fog because of wife's pregnancy.
  
• Pangborn arrives same bar as Warden Porter/says "rough month"/tells her story about Lacy capturing "devil" and says not to release No  Name
  
• Warden Porter agrees for Deputy Warden Reeves to move No Name to solitary cell with inmate likely to kill him (No Name) and Reeves does move him.
  

27 - Thursday

• Morning - Henry comes downstairs - Ruth does impromptu birthday celeb/noting birthday 27th.  Ruth also mentions discovering Henry is lactose intolerant on 7th birthday.  
  
• Molly meets sister in Mellow Tiger Bar.   Molly tells sister -- "I take half a pill, once a day, just to muffle other people's noise."    "I called you ... because ... I'm going to be on Local Color next week."
  
• Scene -- Shawshank Prison -- "Adolph" approaches NN -- NN says "don't want to touch me"
  
• Night - Henry at Mellow Tiger Bar bar has conversation with Jackie Torrance and through bartender slips Zalewski a note
  
• Same night -- Henry arrives home and finds Pangborn digging in backyard. He's digging up a  mutt he and Ruth buried New Years day (struck by truck) to prove to Ruth the dog is still dead.
  
• Same night -- Inside house - Henry opens refrigerator - finds chess piece
  
• Same night -- Henry receives phone call from Zalewski and joins him in his vehicle in front of Deaver house.  ZALEWSKI:  I haven't seen him since yesterday.  That douchebag from corporate took him out of the infirmary last night and walked him down to solitary.
  

30 - Sunday  

• Henry joins Prayer Group to get into Shawshank/boards bus with other members and Pastor
  
• Church bus pulls into Shawshank and the group goes into the chapel
  
• At the prison, they find No Name's cellmate dead.  Prison doc perform autopsy, "Heart -- liver -- lungs.  He's riddled with metastatic cancer."
  
• Zalewski gets No Name outside -- Henry sees him and says he needs to ask for Henry to be his attorney.  Henry takes picks as guards strong-arm No Name back into prison.
  
• NIght -- Pangborn sits outside Shawshank and burns Lacy's letter to him (which was the Lacy voiceovers this episode.)
  

October
16 - Tuesday -- Henry meets Odin and Willie
17 - Wednesday -- Alan Pangborn dies.

2019
February
13 - Ruth Deaver dies

I've been sitting on two images I found on TPTB's Facebook page.  And I've been sitting on them because I think they're just promotional pieces.  The first is a news article dated July 25, 2018 and says Henry Deaver arrived in Castle Rock that day.  The second has an August 10th date and seems to reporting something happening at Shawshank (although it doesn't mention Zalewski's killing spree -- it's probably about that).

Since last night's episode gave us a date of October 16 which I believe and weather wise, it would explain people wearing light jackets, I can't believe that Henry got off that bus July 25 and it's been almost 3 months since No Name was discovered at Shawshank.  That timing just doesn't make sense.  Since July 25 was the series premiere date, I'm chalking these two images up to show promos.   What do you think?

Can't be sure. I can see how both would make sense. CR is very careful about the information it gives us. I'm of the mind that every single little piece we receive is intentional.

There is evidence that it has been a few months. The release of NN looks like it occurred within a matter of days, and it might have. However, nothing in the justice system moves that fast.

Also, remember how I thought it was odd that Zalewski was right back on the job the very next day after discharging a live round inside the prison block nearly killing his buddy? Maybe it wasn't the next day.

CR makes it look as though NN built his structure overnight. I don't remember seeing it there on the day that Jackie walks in to find a naked no name (NNN). CR may not have showed that area in that scene though. I'll start paying attention for time related things now that this issue is at the forefront.

I'm working on the episode 2 transcript and Ruth did a little celebration for Henry's birthday which is the 27th.

RUTH DEAVER:  My age, you get a grace period.  (lights a birthday candle retrieved from pantry and sticks it on the piece of "birthday cake")  Happy birthday, Henry.

HENRY DEAVER:  You know I'm older than he was.

RUTH DEAVER:  Who?

HENRY DEAVER:  Dad.

RUTH DEAVER:  Older than he was when?

HENRY DEAVER:  Ever.

RUTH DEAVER:  Is that why you're here?   I was thinkin' about when you turned seven.  I made a big batch of that buttercream frosting.  That was before we knew about your lactose thing.   Never seen a cake disappear and reappear that fast.  (chuckles) You probably don't remember that.

HENRY DEAVER:  No. (blows out candle)

If he did arrive on July 25th, then this would be 2 days later -- July 27th. I think it fits time-wise with the action in episode one and up until this scene in episode 2. I'm having a hard time though with episode 6 occurring Oct 16. That's like 2 months and 2 or 3 weeks later. Seems like too much time.

I agree. It seems that way. However, and I'm not sure why, but I had already started thinking that more time has passed than we are being led (whether it be intentional or not) to believe.

It occurred to me that, when it comes to present day Castle Rock, we might be watching something more akin to a highlight reel as opposed to something more resembling a real time live feed, if that makes any sense at all. I don't remember what triggered those thoughts though.

Actually, I do remember. Pangborn told Henry that Ruth's Dr. appointment is in October. Then Pangborn asks Henry if he is available in October. In ep 6, we are shown Ruth at a Dr. office with Pangborn. If this was the October appointment, which I am betting it was, then it fits with the highlight reel record of events.

I agree.  I wish I had realized this when I first started my rewatch.  I'm trying to pay attention now to what people are wearing.  It seems to me, the drug peddler kid that Molly met when she bought drugs was wearing shorts.  That was the same day Henry arrived in Castle Rock.

Henry told his mom and Alan that he was staying "a few days" but hasn't mentioned anything about the length of his stay (so far in 1 and 2) than that.  However, I have noticed when watching the most recent episode -- most people are wearing jackets.

I haven't seen anything on Lacy's suicide that gives a date.  At one point in the beginning,  Henry picks up a newspaper with Warden Lacy headlines and picture but there was no date on that paper and the body of the article wasn't sharp enough to read.

I initially thought when I listed the sequence of events for episode one that we were working with a timeline at that point with the month of July.  I've gone back to see what I could find on Leanne Gaitskill's execution.  I found this which leads me to believe, her execution occurred in December of 2017.  So, several months pass before Henry visits the gator farm.

Ah. As usual, my memory fails me. Still though, it is this quote combined with seeing Ruth at the doctor that got me wondering about the passage of time.

Regarding warden Lacy's death date. It couldn't have been too long prior to NN being discovered. I'm of the opinion that Lacy was the only prison employee who knew NN was there. Hence, he must have been the one feeding him. How long could NN survive w/o food?

NN has special abilities so it is difficult to answer that question definitively. Another time indicator would be the installment of the new Warden. How long could that take? Anther hard question to answer.

Did Mrs. Lacy appear to still be grieving?

I suppose the bigger question might be, does the time passed between all of the 2018 events change anything or give us additional insight into what's going on?

But if No Name is so bad, why even keep him alive? Maybe he's simply immortal.

I'm back to chalking the quoted two images to promos of the new series.

The dates just do not make sense.

Episode two shows people wearing jackets and light coat -- even scarves. And I don't believe (at this point) Henry has left town and come back. I think it's still within a few days of his arrival.

In this episode, Henry goes to a local bar, has a conversation with Jackie Torrance and through the bartender, slips Zalewski a note. While Henry was at the bar, right before Jackie walks up, the television was playing a hockey game.

From what I can tell, the televised game looks like "college hockey". Since the timeline of the show at this point would be sept/oct (IMO), the game would be played in our future.

So, if TPTB are still paying close attention to the background, then this might be a future scheduled game and if so, may provide a date (like Pres. Bush broadcast pinpointed the date Lacy built the cage).

Any thoughts?

New Day -- Wed 9/26

• Henry Deaver visits Lacy's house -- hoping to find info on NN.  Henry finds file in Lacy's office with clippings of past Castle Rock tragedies.  Widow Lacy (informed by neighbor to Henry's identity) tells him to leave as she and Warden Lacy were members of Rev. Lacy's congregation.  It's evident she blames Henry for the Reverend's death.  Henry notices padlocked basement door.
  
• Henry Deaver visits the church "the Incarnation" -- current Reverend is talking to Prayer Partners and gets some volunteers for new inmates.  Jackie Torrence volunteers.  Pastor reminds people they'll collect their engraved Bibles Sunday at ten.  Later, tells Henry that Lacy didn't attend while he was there - dropped off Martha and drive out to the woods.
  
• Shawshank Prison -- Zalewski removes NN's untouched food tray -- talks about being in a fog because of wife's pregnancy.
  
• At Hilton Augusta -- bar -- Warden Porter at bar/Pangborn sits next and winds up telling story about pulling Lacy over and he had NN in the trunk of his car/then tells her not to let him out.
  
• Shawshank Prison  -- Warden Porter and Dep Warden Reeves are down in NN's cage area -- ends conversation -- Porter nods in agreement to Reeves suggestion of making it all go away.
  
• Shawshank Prison  -- Reeves escorts NN to solitary and puts him in with a prisoner likely to kill him.
  

New Day - Thurs 9/27

• Henry's birthday 9/27 (39 years old -- 11 in Jan 1991) Henry comes downstairs - finds square of cake at his place setting.  Ruth says your birthday is still the 27th, isn't it and then lights a candle -- says Happy Birthday, Henry.  Henry says he's older than Dad was -- ever.  (Rev Deaver born 1952 - died Jan 1991 -- 38 if birthday after January.)
  
• Molly looks out the window of her parents' house at the Deaver house.  Has several flashbacks. FB's circa 1990 - Molly & Henry signal via flashlights/notebook writing Henry Deaver repeatedly/being awakened @ 2:17 in the morning by the Rev and Henry leaving for one of their outings.
  
• Mellow Tiger Bar which is a Combination Diner/Bar/Bowling alley/Molly is seated at a table and takes 1/2 pill.  Molly's sister joins her. Molly tells sister -- I take half a pill, once a day, just to muffle other people's noise.  Forget it.  I called you ... because ... I'm going to be on Local Color next week.   I'm going on to talk about the revitalization of historic downtown, starting with the yarn mill.  So I need $40,000 from the equity on Mom and Dad's house for a five-year commercial lease.  Her sister balks, but Molly lays the papers on the table and tells her she signed her name.  Molly gets up and leaves thanking her sister for lunch.
  
• Scene -- Shawshank Prison -- "adolph" approaches NN -- NN says "don't want to touch me"
  
• Night - Mellow Tiger bar -- Attny Deaver talks to Jackie Torrence at bar/slips Zalewski note via bartender. (Jackie mentions Nan's luncheonette - nan needed money for titanium leg for nephew - tried to blackmail Maine governor's chief of staff -- Nan's was burned out.
  
• Night - Deaver house -- Henry arrives home, finds Pangborn digging up dead mutt they buried on New years day this year to prove to Ruth, the mutt was still dead. Pangborn says Ruth's next appointment is with a doctor in Boston in November.  per Henry -- Henry was made conservator of his mother 3 years ago.
  
• As Henry walks back towards the house, we see Molly across the street in her house, staring out the window at the Deaver house.  FLASHBACK:  1991/young Molly questioned by Deputy Ridgewood.
  
• Same night -- Deaver House/Now inside, Henry opens the refrigerator/finds chess piece/receives phone call from Guard Zalewski
  
• Henry meets with Zalewski inside his car outside the Deaver house.  ZALEWSKI:  I haven't seen him since yesterday.  That douchebag from corporate took him out of the infirmary last night and walked him down to solitary.

NEW Day Sunday 9/30

• SCENE  In front of the church in Castle Rock.  There's a line of people (Henry Deaver among them) boarding a school bus.  The Pastor is there as well.  The Pastor hands each person a book as they board the bus.  This is most likely Sunday as the pastor appears to be giving each person a bible -- which the night of the prayer partners meeting he said they could pick up the engraved bibles Sunday at 10:00.
  
• Church bus pulls into Shawshank and the group goes into the chapel
  
• Guard goes into NN's cell and finds other inmate "adolph" dead
  
• Autopsy on "adolph" reveals --"Heart -- liver -- lungs.  He's riddled with metastatic cancer."  No advance signs -- appearing healthy and extremely fit when NN was placed in his cell.
  
• When Henry emerges from the chapel, he sees NN (Zalewski had pushed him outside)  NN and Henry connect over distance -- Henry takes pictures with his cell phone as guards get NN and take him back into the prison.
  
• NIght -- Pangborn sits outside Shawshank and burns Lacy's letter to him (which was the Lacy voiceovers this episode.)

So, if Wendell is fifteen in 2018, he would have been born in 2012 or 2013 depending on the month.

Henry was 11 years old when he went missing in January 1991. We know his birthday is later in the year so he would have turned 12 at some point in 1991. His birth year would be 1979.

Do we know the date?

I've been sitting on two images I found on TPTB's Facebook page.  And I've been sitting on them because I think they're just promotional pieces.  The first is a news article dated July 25, 2018 and says Henry Deaver arrived in Castle Rock that day.  The second has an August 10th date and seems to reporting something happening at Shawshank (although it doesn't mention Zalewski's killing spree -- it's probably about that).

Since last night's episode gave us a date of October 16 which I believe and weather wise, it would explain people wearing light jackets, I can't believe that Henry got off that bus July 25 and it's been almost 3 months since No Name was discovered at Shawshank.  That timing just doesn't make sense.  Since July 25 was the series premiere date, I'm chalking these two images up to show promos.   What do you think?

Sports channels often replay games. You can see NHL games all summer long if you tune in to ESPN or the NHL network at the right time. So maybe it was a replay.

I don't follow college hockey, or college anything for that matter. Best I can figure is that this game is between Michigan State and Minnesota. Doing some quick and easy searches, I haven't found this particular game. This has piqued my interest so I might keep looking.

There's no hockey in Maine? What about Canada? The Boston Bruins? Confusing. Maybe a very oblique allusion to the movie Fargo??? Or the game was just handy off of someone's old video. I think they found a game and just used it.

Minnesota looks ranked but they're losing badly at home. Also both states begin with M as does Maine.

Probably irrelevant.

I came up empty. I was hoping a simple search might give us a date. It's a long shot and not worth spending a lot of time on, IMO.

the Minnesota Golden Gophers were founded in 1921. They've won five national championships. Interestingly one was against Maine. In 2002.

apparently Maine was touted to win the 91-92 season but was upset by Michigan State in the first round. Maine did win the 92-93 championship. In subsequent years though there was something of a college hockey scandal involving ineligible players. btw the championship team had two identical twins as forwards. Twins: always worth an eyebrow raise. Another championship occurred in 1999: against neighboring New Hampshire.

I don't know why that plastic bag is tagged 12/17 -- I think that's a date, but the property release form is dated either 08/17/18 or 09/17/18 -- I can't tell which.

In case you're wondering why I wanted to include Leanne Gaitskill in the timeline -- her husband was Richard Chambers aka Eyeball Chambers from "The Stand" movie and from the novella "The Body". Lacy mentions the boy's body that was found by the railroad tracks occurring the summer before his game.

The novella is set in 1960 -- the movie changed the year to 1959. I guess TPTB saw it only fitting to change it as well.

Two of the clippings Atty Henry found in Lacy's office in S01E02 -- I added these to the timeline along with other references to books/movies that have been made in episodes one and two as the characters were mentioned in this show's universe.
