I know they had great draft picks for years but they have been really good for 5-6 years now, and yet still seem to find great pitchers.

whatever they are doing in the minors should be studied and implemented

they don't trade all their picks for one guy

 + true, they don't typically trade much of anything, they just keep their players until they are eligible for free agency and let them go.

they really have only signed longoria, and that was well before he was a free agent, mostly they just let them go and bring someone else up. maybe sign a few free agents to short term contracts so they don't get killed if it doesn't work out


They manage to do this on a team salary of like 57-60 million a year.  

I think this year was the first time we've had a 1st round pick in YEARS

we'll never have a low payroll again; there's too many expectations to have stars here

neither will the Red sox, this is a down year for the sox and it's like 158 million, I just looked at the dodgers- 220 million  

the Phillies have alot( about 50 mil +) coming off the books next year, if they spend it right you could be right back in it again, the key is to spread it out and not give it to 2 guys and think thats enough

I don't think money is the issue - they're loaded and are due to sign a new tv contract so money is rolling in.

we do need a new bullpen and at least one outfielder.

Halladay is going to be interesting. He's determined to come back and if he looks a fraction of the old Roy, they will probably resign him - they LOVE him.

Cards are collapsing.

But they can turn it around, everyone gets at least one bad streak in a season

I sure hope so. The Pirates are playing like it's October already.

He "didn't sign up for this". Neither did we

I had turned the game on when I got home last night just in time to see the grand slam that put them down 7-1, then flashed back and forth.

I watched gomes two great defensive plays in the 8th, and said oh well, you can't win them all but it's another series win.


I wake up and here everyone on the radio talking about what a huge win that was.


Now they Arizona and Houston, hopefully they can go on a little run here and show tampa who is in charge.

right after I posted this, I checked my twitter feed - I am not the only one throwing that quote around



the bottom of the 9th got even better - the Giants basically spotted us bases loaded with zero outs and we COULD NOT SCORE. Not one fucking sac fly

wtf? Bastardo was suspended in the bio-Geneisis scandal It certainly hasn't helped him throw a strike.

Today is the first time I heard his name associated with it.

Yea it's a tough schedule.

fate being what it is, they have 6 games against Baltimore in the last 2 weeks, hmmmm let me see when the last time they had a bunch against Baltimore at the end of the year.......

I shouldn't be looking that far ahead, they have the month of August to deal with first.

Like to see lackey bounce back a little form his last starts, which weren't as good as I became used to seeing.

If Bucholz can EVER come back, if Lester could return to form, plus throw in Lackey and Peavy, it could be a great run, I am hopeful.

bucholz threw " aggressively' on flat ground yesteday.  
Lester will be good one start then poop his pants the next, can't see that changing.it's gotta be a mental thing, if he gets hit early, he can't recover and ends up throwing 100 pitches through 4 1/2 innings

If they can throw in a few spot starts from the yougens this month they may be able to hold it together

We almost had the same result with Anibal Sanchez...pitches a great 7+ innings, strikes out 11, but we don't score anything for him....luckily Alex Avila saves it for us in the 9th
