The Saints won with defense and field goals. It reminded me of the late 80s-early 90s teams, like Bobby Hebert/Ironhead Heyward days, when Morten Andersen became the all-time NFL leader in points scored.

Same with Pats, gave up only 10 but struggled on offense. If Bills go for two field goals instead of fourth downs in that game, we'd have had OT.

That kind of day.

I am not surprised the Rams got beat. Bruce Ariens...remember him? He had two early-season games circled on his calendar.

Also, the Panthers are winning without Cam Newton. It seems bad fashion sense is a game liability.

Replay of the game aired late night this week. Watching the game the second time allows you to see a lot more.
HRD, your encapsulation sums it up perfectly.
Zeke had 35yrds, on 18 carries. Lattimore held Cooper to 5 catches for minimal yrds.
I've got a funny feeling future opponents will try and use the same method.

Got a question for you Peggy.
Are the Patriots going 16-0? And, if they aren't who beats them?

Huge fan of Ariens, TBC. Didn't know about the circled-games.

TBC, does Cam get his job back if the Panthers go undefeated until his return?

I am a huge fan of Ariens when he has sideline meltdowns.

As for Newton, of course he gets the starting job back, regardless. Rivera is stupid like that, plus he has a stable of wardrobe designers on retainer.

Meanwhile Sassy has already started the smoke-blowing. "Gostkowski absence could cost the Patriots a trip to the Super Bowl." Gostkowski is a solid veteran kicker, he's been a Patriot long enough that he took the team scoring record away from Adam Vinateri a while back. But the team is good enough that he can be replaced on the roster by a veteran journeyman, and Mike Nugent is the guy for now at least, without significantly reducing the team's overall performance or expected results.

I started calling him that when he was still partnered with Bayless. They were "Skippy and Sassy". Ah, but I wasn't done there. Instead of "Jim Rome is Burning" I had "Jim Rome is an Inflamed Hemorrhoid". "Mike and Mike in the Morning" was "G&G Drivel Factory", "PTI" actually stood for "Pontificating Twin Idiots" and "Around the Horn" was "Completely Missing the Point".

I remember enjoying PTI in its first few years. My interest in the show declined in a steep curve though. I've tried watching it a few times over the last few years and haven't made it through an episode.

The one thing i enjoy about Sassy is that he pisses off my wife so much. It can be fun to see how bent she gets about some of the stupid crap he says, and to see her mystified, "Why is he SOO angry? Is there somebody under that desk cranking a vise that his nuts are in? He acts like he's severely constipated, maybe that's why he spews so much shit from his mouth." He can make me laugh some times on his own, though it's at him not with him (the Gostkowski proclamation sounds like it was worth some hahas), and it's usually not worth watching him because i often get a headache before i get any decent chuckles.

Are there any ESPN "personalities" you do like?

Some of the Footie guys on ESPNFC are alright. Shaka Hislop, a Trinibagian (that's the new term, I guess, even though Trinidad is about 20x the area of Tobago and has 30x the population) who wore the 1 kit for the Soca Warriors for about 15 years and spent more than a decade playing in EFL teams is a good analyst. Gab Marcotti writes excellent columns and gives great reportage. But on the other hand, Steve Nicol, former Liverpool manager who spent several seasons in charge of New England is a complete git. In addition to showing utter favoritism to Liverpool he seems completely unaware that the rules have changed since he managed and the paradigm of professional soccer has changed even more. He literally still thinks it's 2002 when he was bossing guys like Jamie Redknapp, Steve Mc Menamin, and Robbie Fowler at Anfield.

Don't get me wrong, Hodge, i don't enjoy Sassy for any legitimate reasons. In fact he can give me a nasty headache if i watch long enough. He has some entertainment value (which btw is what the "E" stands for in ESPN) but he's an obnoxious blowhard who's utterly ignorant of the NFL and not much an of expert in his specialty, which is the NBA.

Sandi is definitely right about you, too, buddy. I used to really enjoy Rachel Nichols, still do really, though i don't think i've seen her in a long time. Jalen Rose and SVP used to be pretty decent too. I really don't watch ESPN very much anymore though, so i really haven't caught up.

Will Dissly lost for the rest of the season, again. This time it's his left achilles tendon. Last year it was his right patellar tendon in game 4, for those of you who are keeping score.

Can't say I recall that one, Mo. Must have been interesting.

I think that if Dissly is going to have a chance at a lasting NFL career he is going to need to slim down a little, start looking less like a defensive lineman and more like, say, Gronk or Gonzo. He's a great blocking TE who also happens to be pretty good at catching the ball and running routes. If he slims down and learns to rely more on technique, less on bulk, he can still be a great blocking TE but he won't be putting as much strain on the connective tissue in his legs.

Why can't the Cowboys beat a team their suppose to beat like the Patriots. 33-0!
I mean, they never looked like they were in the game. That's what you're suppose to do.

There should be a law against playing football, on Thanksgiving, in Foxborough, MA.

Peggy, you know my stance on playing football in stadiums without roofs. Those games should be moved indoors. So let it be written. So let it be done. pfft

What's your opinion on the addition of Sanu?

The word i've heard is that the starting QB for Sunday's game will be a game-time decision. In my opinion, that is some smoke-and-mirrors horseflop, and Bridgewater will be starting the game. The only reason that Brees might start that game is if he really is well and truly 100% healed. From his broken thumb. On his throwing hand. After 4 weeks. At 40 years old. :|

We are talking about the Cardinals, still?
It makes perfect sense to continue with Bridgewater for another week. Giving Brees another week to get stronger in that hand can only help.

Seems Gordon is on the outs, for reasons unknown (his injury is apparently pretty minor). He may have played his last game for NE. I like Sanu, but he's no AB.

As for Brees, I think he'll play. And yeah, I think he should, until he's proven he's on the downslope of his career. Bridgewater is NO's Foles, and should be getting interest from other teams in the off-season. A no-lose situation for Mo's team.

Personally, I like Gordon in this particular situation. Especially since "Gronk" has retired.
Sanu has always been a #2, because Julio Jones was on the other side. With no one to contend with, I'd like to see what he can bring to the table.

Peggy, just heard New England will be placing Josh Gordon on IR, and will probably put him on waivers.
What's your opinion on the addition of Sanu?

HRD, also heard Brees will practice this week. Does that mean he'll replace Bridgewater this Sunday? And, should he?

Seems Gordon is on the outs, for reasons unknown (his injury is apparently pretty minor). He may have played his last game for NE. I like Sanu, but he's no AB.

As for Brees, I think he'll play. And yeah, I think he should, until he's proven he's on the downslope of his career. Bridgewater is NO's Foles, and should be getting interest from other teams in the off-season. A no-lose situation for Mo's team.
Please don't misunderstand me, Peggy Sawyer, i'm not saying that Brees shouldn't return to the starting role; i'm saying he shouldn't return this week.

But yeah, i think i mentioned upthread somewhere my opinion that Teddy Bridgewater is a good enough QB to start for a few or five different franchises in the NFL. I don't think Brees is as physically conditioned as Brady, though, and is only one year younger. So i'd hope that the Saints hold onto Teddy unless they plan to draft or trade for somebody better.

Lots of great HoF QBs started out as backups. Brees himself was backing up Philip Rivers until the Saints traded for him, and i hope everybody here remembers that Tom Brady won his first Superbowl as a 6th round pick backup for the injured Drew Bledsoe. Steve Young won his first when Montana was hurt.

OK, i was wrong.

There was another scenario i hadn't considered, which was that Drew Brees really was all the way back ready to play. The miracles performed by contemporary sports medicine will never cease to amaze me.

I have to admit, that out of all the crows i've ever had to eat, this is my favorite so far.

I still think it was a bad idea. Another thumb to a helmet, and the season could've been over.

Notice I said "could've"! Bridgewater played the HELL out of some football over these last five weeks. I saw the highlights, and I was glad there were a lot of posters thanking him for a great job.

That would be great to see, but there's a chance the 49ers might have something to say about it.

Man, they just slaughtered the Panthers. Isn't Brian a huge Panthers fan? Oh Brian!

Leuthen is a Falcons fan iirc, as is WartyOne. I think our resident Panthers fan was 2fingers.

The 49ers are playing well for sure, but they haven't faced strong teams yet, other than the Rams, who are a divisional foe - they beat the Steelers the week after Roethlisberger was injured, and it was a tight game. The hardest parts of their season are in front of them. I'll see where they are 7 more weeks from now before they worry me. I personally haven't seen them play yet this year, but they have a date with my boys December 8th IN N'Awlins. They also have two games against Seattle, they'll see the Rams again, and they have yet to face the Packers, Ravens, Falcons, and two against Arizona. It's a pretty soft schedule all around, they might wash out of the playoffs early if they're not playing better football by then.

I'd like to see the Saints play the Pats for the VL Trophy. Heck, i'd like to see the Saints in the Superbowl.

The 49ers are for real. Obviously I like Jimmy G, but Nick Bosa is also proving an incredible pick for them. I think they are a year away from the big show, though.

Because the 'Boys had a bye, I got a chance to watch their last game against the Panthers. As I mentioned above, they demoralized Carolina.

I like Jimmy G as well, but probably not in the same way as Peggy I love you. He really looked masterful Sunday. Plus, Shannahan is a great play-caller.
IIRC, Bosa had something like 3-sacks and an interception. What a stat-line.

If Eli Manning never plays another snap, will he be enshrined in Canton Ohio?

It's a rhetorical question. Of course he does. He's a two-time Superbowl MVP, 4-time All-Pro, 6th all-time in passing attempts and completions, 8th in passing yards and TDs, and perhaps most importantly, he's got that magic last name and played 16 seasons for the New York Football Giants.

But does he really deserve it? He never got within sniffing distance of an NFL MVP award nor an Offensive Player of the Year Award. He led the league in Interceptions three times, in longest pass completed twice, and once in 4th-Quarter Comebacks and Game-Winning Drives. Other than that he really has no superlatives. He's never been the best, and was really only barely making elite categorization fairly for a few years at the peak of his abilities (there were other years he was called elite because he had great support).

Some of his all-time ranks: 45th in passer rating; 143rd in yards per catch; 88th in yards per attempt; 35th in net yards per attempt; and 43rd in pass completion percentage.

Well, like i said, it's academic. But i'd be interested in hearing anybody else weigh in.

I think he gets in as well.
Two SB MVPs and rings should get you in in any situation.
It also doesn't hurt that his last name is Manning.
I haven't looked this up, but is Archie in the HoF?

Yes, Archie Manning is the HoF QB with the lowest winning percentage. It's unlikely that any QB with a lower winning percentage will ever be inducted. No doubt in my mind that he belongs, though. He was amazing.

Archie's in the Hall of Fame all right, but it's the Hall that also has Tim Tebow and Doug Flutie in it. No other.

Um, Archie Manning is enshrined in the pro football Hall of Fame in Canton. Tim and Doug are enshrined in the college football Hall in Atlanta, and Doug is also in the Canadian Football Hall in Hamilton Ontario.

Tebow's jersey from his big overtime playoff win is on display in Canton, but he's not enshrined there as a player.

Unless i missed some shit, which is possible. You got some links to back up that smack talk, Peggy Sawyer?

OK, maybe Tebow isn't officially in the college hall of fame yet; he obviously will be as soon as he's eligible, which is soon. But while Archie is in the college HOF, he is most definitely not in Canton.

I sit corrected.

All these years, i've thought Archie got in as a Veteran's Committee pick, and now i realize that i don't even know if Canton does those or not. I mean, i know there's no statistical argument for his enshrinement, but he was one of the most talented of his era.

I'm starting to think Hodge is right about you, Peggy Sawyer. You ARE a dream crusher! pfft

I really didn't know, but you're right HRD, he didn't do enough to get in on his merits.

Oh, and the HoF does have something like the Veteran's Committee pick, called Senior Nominee (old-timer candidate).

What's got me is the turnaround of the NFC-West.
They went from the elite of the League, to barely holding their heads above water.

Speaking of crushed dreams, my team laid a massive egg on SNF before a bye week against a second-year QB. Maybe one too many personnel changes to handle this year. I can only hope this motivates them the way a certain loss in KC a few years ago took them all the way to a SB ring. But right now-- facepalm.

I think you mean NFC East, Hodge. The West is a combined 23-10-1. The East is 12-21, which is well below water. But the NFC East really hasn't been the elite division for many years now.

________

I wouldn't be too worried about the Patriots if i were a fan. Peggy Sawyer, you yourself said they wouldn't win every game, and the Ravens are a very good team this year, second-year QB and all.

And that's why everyone hates Patriots fans almost as much as they hate the Patriots. Lose one game and it is time to hit the panic button. "Maybe this will be the spark..." or whatever. That's just crap that dunderhead sports media say. The team had a bad game. It happens. Professionals move on from bad games. "Oh, it's right before a bye and they are going to dwell on it." No. They aren't. There is absolutely nothing standing in the way of home field for the Pats at this point.

And don't degrade Lamar Jackson with the "second-year" label. Russell Wilson won a Super Bowl in his second year. Jackson is being mentioned for MVP in some quarters and he'd probably have a good chance at it except for, well, Wilson (200/293, 2505 yds, 8.5 yds/att, 22 TD, 1 INT, 118.2 rtg 78.5 QBR)

She said they wouldn't win every game, but in the same breath, refused to give us an idea who could beat them.
I kept hearing all through Sunday morning, 'if anyone can beat the Patriots, it would be the Ravens'.
Obviously, looking at my SNF pick, I sure didn't believe them.

Sure you're right, but I guess I'm mostly disgusted with what's happened to to the "Yams".
Last year, they were the darlings of the NFC-West as well as the whole League.

And don't get me started on the NFC-East. The Giants and Redskins are has-beens (the Giants will probably beat the 'Boys tonight). The Eagles show life one week and like the Cowboys, bow down to one the lowest teams the next.

IMO, the Ravens made the Patriots look old and slow.
Just about every play from the Ravens offense, had some type of motion and miss-direction. Really surprised Belichek didn't do a better job of scouting.
