I am guessing a group of scientists (maybe working for the military) invented a way to shut down anything using electricity, unless you had what they had created to block it. Similar to the book The Trigger by Arthur C. Clarke. Does not explain why you could not use a diesel engine though....

I liked it too, i'm willing to wait to see if they ever explain why the batteries don't work, why the rifles are muzzleloaders but the "I'm On a Horse" guy has a pistol that works, and how Charlie manages to have a designer leather outfit that looks like she just picked it up at kohl's before the day started
lol, yeah, I thought that as well, Charlie and others were extremely well dressed for people who have not had access to a store, in a long time.
Yeah, the militia people are way better equipped then the people living in villages.
I like that, I'm on a Horse Guy, that will be his name, until, I know it will be picked up.
Why did the older dude, in AC/DC shirt, not give Charlie, or hot uncle Miles the pendant (?)

I agree, someone on FB, said it should have been a 2 hour premiere, and we get a bit more background on the characters.

Yes, it felt rushed, and you need time to establish characters.

LOL, you just want to see her boobs.
The writers/who ever made up this show, say it was not a solar flare (EMP), so what could happen that would disable, electronics, batteries, and vehicles that do not have computer chips in them?
From what I have read, an EMP, would not effect vehicles that did not have computer chips in them, to include older tractors and cars (that are still on the road today)
I really hope they give us a reason for batteries not working, cause that bugs the hell out of me.

As far as the engines not working, Eric says that the physicist he consulted with says the premise is possible. So, whatever it is, apparently it could really happen.
In the article, as far as what does not work, Eric says:
“Anything that throws a spark, any circuit that carries an electrical charge…. That’s the simple, clean rule,” said Kripke. “That means batteries and spark plugs, engines….”

No spark plugs in a diesel. No circuits, No batteries needed if you have a standard shift. Just compression.

Here's a comment from the consulting physicist:
The “Revolution” writers did call on the physicist David Saltzberg, a consultant on the CBS sitcom “The Big Bang Theory,” scientifically to assess their secret rationale for the blackout. According to Mr. Kripke, Mr. Saltzberg told them the plot “is absolutely possible” and called it “amazing.” Mr. Saltzberg declined an interview request.

Yes! I think/hope she is still around.
So, what kind of event would have to happen, to prevent batteries from working?
I did a quick search, and no where did I find a reason for batteries to stop working, except for if they got wet, or run down (over used, or not used at all) batteries have a shelf live. For them to stop working, is really confusing me. And, since, I cannot find a reason, bugging the crap out of me. It does not make sense.
And to stop combustional (sp) engines from working. In the event of an EMP, they would still work.

not sure about the batteries, but almost all engines have electronic ignitions right now, so almost all of them would not work an EMp would get into the wiriing and overload all the circuit boards and burn them out. of course it would probably do that to the computer that black woman was using too. I'm thinking even if battery powered stuff worked right after the black out, it would all get used up in the first couple of years. No way to recharge stuff at some point.

Very true, Goof, but, there are solar powered chargers, that can re-charge rechargeable batteries. I am not sure, how long they last or how often they can be charged. So, 15 years is a long time, they are probably SOL.

I think the batteries didn't work right from the start.
Eric Kripke (the creator) said, about what didn't work - “Anything that throws a spark, any circuit that carries an electrical charge…. That’s the simple, clean rule,” said Kripke. “That means batteries and spark plugs, engines….”
So the key seems to be - anything that throws a spark............................hmmmmmm............
I can't imagine what it is.

Good one! The Earth IS over due for a pole reversal, although there would actually be a lot more side effects beyond an EMP.

I saw something interesting on the season premier last night of "Haven."
They had an incident which resulted in magnetic changes and the car engines stopped working.
I didn't know that there was a connection between the two, but apparently there is.
So, I'm thinking that desi is on the right track - some kind of magnetic incident is the cause. Maybe not a pole reversal, but some kind of magnetic incident.

From what I have read/seen, a total pole reversal, would totally flip the world, and there would be few survivors.
Like you I do believe, in this show, some kind of magnetic incident, could cause batteries to stop working.
And if it is because Des stopped pushing the button on Dharma Island, I will be super pissed. lol
