I'll prop it somewhere in the bar area with the rest of our baseball stuff

I really couldn't care less about him. He's not Philly and doesn't pretend to be. We just don't need him. We also have two of our own younger guys I'd like to see practice pitching the 9th.
If you guys are in, then we still have hope, lol. I think our records are about the same

I don't see it happening, they would have to play somewhere around 650 baseball for the remainder of the year, and win virtually every game against their division rivals.
but stranger things have happened.

if they can play like they have for the last 8 games, they'll be in the playoffs, sadly they pretty much HAVE to win at this pace for awhile to make it back into the race.
Ya never know, at least they are fun to watch again lately, the pitching has been nothing short of amazing, but other than yesterday, they are just squeaking by with 1 more run than the other teams

the next couple of weeks will be the make or break for them, they play toronto for 3 more, then tampa, then toronto again and the yankees. if they can keep the momentum going for the next 2 weeks then they may have a shot at it, they need to win at least 10 of the next 12 games if they want a shot at anything.

if they can beat the division teams they can jump up pretty fast, their only hope as I see it is to win the division, there are too many teams ahead of them in the wild card and they won't play against any of them enough to make a dent in that

In order to continue the losing, we have recalled Phillip Aumont, who has sucked everytime they've recalled him. I believe he is the last remaining prospect that we received in that ill-fated Cliff Lee trade in early 2010. The one where they made room for Doc Halladay. They seem desperate to have gotten something for their trouble.
And Paplebon, who has been great all season suddenly blows a save in front of tons of scouts

yesterday we scored the winning run on the "buster posey". Howard was out by a mile but since the catcher was blocking the plate, he was called safe on review.
I really hate that rule (even though it worked for us here). How many catchers really got that hurt when getting run over? They know what they're getting into when the become catchers.

I can honestly say that papi is a much better clutch hitter than Yaz was, but yaz was great, he had a sweet swing.
Overall I would agree with him, though i would think he would be second behind ted williams who i never saw but my father did.
i became a die hard red sox fan in the early 70's which was the latter years of Yaz, rico petrocelli etc.
nobody i ever saw played the left field wall better than yaz.
If i was rating great hitters that spent more than 5-6 years with the sox it would be williams, yaz, jim rice, papi then maybe Nomar and boggs.

yeah I agree, the rule really is stupid, I can see if the guy blocked the plate just for the sake of blocking it with no chance to even get the ball, but if the guy is coming in, the catcher really needs to be in the spot so they can throw to him not throw to him and hope he has time to turn and then block the plate.
It's really kinda stu[pid, if he has the ball he can block the plate and get run down, but he can't establish his position then get the ball and then get run down

I would put Yaz ahead of everybody except Williams. Papi is definitely in the top 5 but behind those guys and Jim Rice.
Speaking of Sox hitters, I remember being so high on Mike Greenwell. I thought for sure he was going to be a stud, but I guess the expectations of following Williams, Yaz and Rice in LF were pretty high.

when jim rice first came up in 75, there had been pretty much 2 people to play left field for the sox for like 40 years, williams and yaz.
imagine the pressure he was under when they stuck him out there

when rice was at his best he was an absolute beast. if he doesn't break his arm in 75 the sox win the world series. that was a huge loss in the series.
I remember being crushed to hear he wouldn't be playing.

Exactly. For one I think Rice handled it better than Greenwell did, but Greenwell had the extra pressure of playing behind Rice also. The guy was an incredible hitter.

I don't think they will sign him at this point, he will go to free agency and we will get a draft pick or we can trade him and get substantialy more.
it's stupid, but their philosophy is no long term contracts for anyone 30 or more, and they won't pay him anywhere near what he can get in free agency he's looking at 140 or more

Perhaps he will resign as a free agent?
In retrospect, we should have done that with hamels instead of extending him mid-season .
Some players are special and should get an exception but I also see their point. We have obviously overextended one or two guys.

there should be exceptions, and IMO Lester is one of them.
he isn't kershaw good, but his numbers are in the top 10-15 pitchers in the league as far as starts, innings and era for his career over the last 10 years.
he has won 15 games 3 times in that span, only 4 pitchers have won 15 or more 4 times in that span.
he will get 140+ in free agency, but it won't be from the red sox.
they want him for 4 years and 20-22 million, he will get 6-7 years at 25 + million in free agency and frankly he would be crazy to sign with the sox and leave 40 + million sitting on the table

He should at least get hamels contract which was 6/144 I think. Plus an option for a 7th.

I honestly think if the sox offered him 4 for 100 with an option for a fifth at the beginning of the season he would have taken it.
now that contract that hamels got will be the starting point.
he will get that from someone, probably more. he'll sign for at least 6 years probably seven and be near the 150 plus mark is my guess.
he's got the buld and mechanics to gor for at least 4 of those years. he pitches more with his body and legs than his arm, which save the elbow and shoulder from damage.
it will be sad to see him go, but i would be surprised if he is still a red sox when the month is over.
